Potti, also written as Potty, is a sect of Brahmins in Kerala state of India. The surname Potti is also used in Arya Vyasa Community in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, in which ''Potti'' means short. Etymology ''Potti'' is a Tamil word meaning "deep respect for someone" and is used for Malayali Brahmins except the Nambudiris. History At present, Pottis are often identified as Embrandiris or Tulu Brahmin immigrants. However, there were three classes of Pottis based on three periods of settlement in Kerala. There are Pottis of Kerala origin and Tulu origin. Pottis of Tulu origin came to Malabar region as temple priests in the 16th century. S. Sukumaran Potti, commonly known as Sukumar, is a popular satirist and cartoonist from Kerala state in southern India. He completed his education from University College, Thiruvananthapuram and joined the Kerala Police Department. He started his literary life as a cartoonist in ''Kerala Kaumudi'' and later became a full-fledged writer and satirist. Along with Veloor Krishnankutty, Sukumar was one of the most popular humour writers of his time. Potti Prasad
Potti Prasad (born Kavivarapu Prasada Rao) was an Indian actor who predominantly worked in Telugu cinema. He was introduced to the films by Jandhyala. His notable roles include Chantabbai and Sagara Sangamam. He made his screen debut with Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu in a brief role as one of the two (the other being Padmanabham) prospective bridegrooms for Girija. He was bowled over by the magnanimity of Nagi Reddi and Chakrapani when he was paid Rs.1116/- for that one scene work. He was a friend of another comedian Raja Babu. They acted in stage plays together. His last film was Brundavanam (1992). Career Prasad was a stage actor before making his debut into films. Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu (1959) was his first film as an actor. Chakrapani offered him a role in this film after watching his performance in a stage show in Madras. Potti Sreeramulu
Potti Sreeramulu ( IAST: ''Poṭṭi Śreerāmulu''; 16 March 1901 – 15 December 1952), was an Indian freedom fighter and revolutionary. Sreeramulu is revered as ''Amarajeevi'' ("Immortal Being") in the Andhra region for his self-sacrifice for the Andhra cause. He became famous for undertaking a hunger strike for 56 days in support of having separate state for Andhra Pradesh; he died in the process. His death sparked public rioting and Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru declared the intent by the newly liberated nation to form Andhra State three days following the death of Sreeramulu.
