In biology, a taxon (back-formation from ''taxonomy''; plural taxa) is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. Fish are aquatic, craniate, gill-bearing animals that lack limbs with digits. The earliest organisms that can be classified as fish were soft-bodied chordates that first appeared during the Cambrian period.
