	Ober Pfaltz The Upper Palatinate (german: Oberpfalz, , ) is one of the seven administrative districts of Bavaria, Germany, and is located in the east of Bavaria. Geography The Upper Palatinate is a landscape with low mountains and numerous ponds and lakes in its lowland regions. By contrast with other regions of Germany it is more rural in character and more sparsely settled. It borders (clockwise from the north) on Upper Franconia, the Czech Republic, Lower Bavaria, Upper Bavaria and Middle Franconia. 	Andreas Pfaltz Andreas Pfaltz (born 10 May 1948) is a Swiss chemist known for his work in the area of coordination chemistry and catalysis. Education and professional life Andreas Pfaltz studied at ETH Zurich, completing his undergraduate diploma in natural sciences in 1972 and his PhD in organic chemistry in 1978. His doctoral supervisor was Albert Eschenmoser, whose research into vitamin B12 and other corrin rings would influence Pfaltz's early research. Following a two-year postdoctoral position at Columbia University (early 1978 – late 1979), working for Gilbert Stork on the synthesis of Rifamycin, he returned to ETH Zurich as a lecturer and began his own research. In 1990 he was appointed as an associate professor at the University of Basel, becoming a full professor in 1993. Between 1995 and 1998 he was a director of the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, afterwards returning to the University of Basel, where he has remained till the present day. 	Hugo Pfaltz Hugo Menzel Pfaltz Jr. (September 23, 1931 – August 31, 2019) was an American Republican Party politician who served two terms in the New Jersey General Assembly. Born in Newark, Pfaltz graduated from Millburn High School. He is a graduate of Hamilton College and Harvard Law School, and served in the United States Navy Reserve. Pfaltz lived in Summit, New Jersey and practiced law there. He was elected to the Assembly in 1967, running on a ticket with former Assemblyman Peter McDonough; they defeated former Assemblywoman Irene Griffin and Kenneth White. Pfaltz beat White by 812 votes. In the General Election, McDonough and Pfaltz defeated Democrats George Perselay and Joseph Gannon by wide margins.
