The Peter Mortell Holder of the Year Award (or HOTY) is a tongue-in-cheek, informal award given to the top holder in college football in the United States. History The award was created in 2015 by its first recipient, Peter Mortell. At the time, Mortell was a punter in his senior year at Minnesota. During his career at Minnesota, Mortell handled all punting and holding duties over three seasons. Mortell's career includes 203 punts with an average of per punt, currently ranking him first in team history. Off the field, Mortell (as well as other specialists at Minnesota and around the Big Ten) was known for his sense of humor, which manifested in the award's parodist nature. Holder (gridiron Football)
In gridiron football, the holder is the player who receives the snap from the long snapper during field goal or extra point attempts made by the placekicker. The holder is set on one knee seven yards behind the line-of-scrimmage. Before the play begins, he places the hand which is closest to the placekicker on the ground in a location designated by the kicker's foot, with his forward hand ready to receive the snap (In high school games, the holder/kicker combo is responsible for a kicking block, which lifts the ball off the turf). After receiving the snap, the holder will place the football on the turf, or block, ideally with the laces facing the uprights and the ball accurately placed where the backhand was initially, then balancing the ball with one or two fingers until the ball is kicked. In American football, the long snapper (or deep snapper) is a center on special teams whose duty is to snap the football over a longer distance, typically around 15 yards during punts, and 7–8 yards during field goals and extra point attempts. Overview During field goal and point after touchdown attempts, the snap is received by the holder, typically 7–8 yards away. During punts, the snap is delivered to the punter from 13–15 yards away.
