Pedro Da Silva (athlete)
Pedro Ferreira da Silva Filho (born October 24, 1966) is a former decathlete from Brazil. He won the gold medal in the men's decathlon event at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, and competed for his native country at the 1992 Summer Olympics. His personal best of 8266 points, set in Walnut, California in 1987, lasted twenty-five years as the Brazilian record. Luiz Alberto de Araújo bettered this mark at the 2012 Brazilian championships. Decathlon
The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events. The word "decathlon" was formed, in analogy to the word "pentathlon", from Greek δέκα (''déka'', meaning "ten") and ἄθλος (''áthlos'', or ἄθλον, ''áthlon'', meaning "contest" or “prize”). Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes, while female athletes typically compete in the heptathlon. Traditionally, the title of "World's Greatest Athlete" has been given to the person who wins the decathlon. This began when Gustav V of Sweden told Jim Thorpe, "Sir, you are the world's greatest athlete" after Thorpe won the decathlon at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912. The 1990 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics (Spanish: ''IV Campeonato Iberoamericano de Atletismo'') was the fourth edition of the international athletics competition between Ibero-American nations which was held at the Vila Olímpica in Manaus, Brazil from 14–16 September.. The 3rd World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan between August 23 and September 1. 1517 athletes from 167 countries participated in the event.
