Paul V. Virginia
''Paul v. Virginia'', 75 U.S. (8 Wall.) 168 (1869), is a United States corporate law, U.S. corporate law decision by the United States Supreme Court. It held that a corporation is not a citizen within the meaning of the Privileges and Immunities Clause. Of greater consequence, the Court further held that "issuing a Insurance policy, policy of insurance is not a transaction of commerce," effectively removing the business of insurance beyond the United States Congress's legislative reach (until partially overturned in ''United States v. John William Wallace
John William Wallace (February 17, 1815 – January 12, 1884) was an American lawyer and the seventh Supreme Court of the United States Reporter of Decisions, reporter of decisions of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1863 to 1874. Formative years Born in Philadelphia on February 17, 1815, Wallace graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1833. He then studied law under his father and John Sergeant and was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1836. Career While working as librarian to the Law Association of Philadelphia, he compiled three volumes of decisions of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which sat in that city. He wrote The Reporters (book), The Reporters on English reporters and cases, first as an article in the ''American Law Magazine'' (1844), and then as a book in multiple editions (1845, 1855, 1882) that made his reputation. Insurance law is the practice of law surrounding insurance, including insurance policies and claims. It can be broadly broken into three categories - regulation of the business of insurance; regulation of the content of insurance policies, especially with regard to consumer policies; and regulation of claim handling wise.
