Our Lady's Hospital, Cork
Our Lady's Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Mhuire) was a psychiatric hospital in Cork, County Cork, Ireland. History The hospital has its origins in a facility built in Old Blackrock Road close to present site of the South Infirmary in 1791. The facility joined the state system as a "district asylum", as defined in the Lunacy (Ireland) Act 1821, in 1845. In the late 1840s, a site in Shanakiel was identified for the construction of new hospital of sufficient size to meet the increasing requirements of the City. The new hospital, which was designed by William Atkins in the Gothic revival style and built by Alex Dean, was named after the Earl of Eglington, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. It accordingly opened as the Eglinton Lunatic Asylum in 1852. A chapel was added in November 1885, to the designs of William Henry Hill. Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (), or more formally Lieutenant General and General Governor of Ireland, was the title of the chief governor of Ireland from the Williamite Wars of 1690 until the Partition of Ireland in 1922. This spanned the Kingdom of Ireland (1541–1800) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1801–1922). Deinstitutionalisation (or deinstitutionalization) is the process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services for those diagnosed with a mental disorder or developmental disability. In the late 20th century, it led to the closure of many psychiatric hospitals, as patients were increasingly cared for at home, in halfway houses and clinics, in regular hospitals, or not at all. Deinstitutionalisation works in two ways. The first focuses on reducing the population size of mental institutions by releasing patients, shortening stays, and reducing both admissions and readmission rates. The second focuses on reforming psychiatric care to reduce (or avoid encouraging) feelings of dependency, hopelessness and other behaviors that make it hard for patients to adjust to a life outside of care. William Henry Hill Sr
William Henry Hill (6 November 1837 – 28 July 1911) was an Irish architect based in County Cork. After a fire all but destroyed Cork Courthouse, Washington Street, Hill was awarded the contract for its reconstruction. Hill was the diocesan architect for the Anglican Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross from either 1872 or 1873 to c.1878, as well as the consulting architect to the Cork Lunatic Asylum board for almost forty years. Archibald William Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, 1st Earl of Winton, KT, PC (29 September 18124 October 1861), styled Lord Montgomerie from 1814 to 1819, was a British Conservative politician. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1852 and again from 1858 to 1859.
