Omicron
Omicron (; uppercase Ο, lowercase ο, ell, όμικρον) is the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet. This letter is derived from the Phoenician letter ayin: . In classical Greek, omicron represented the close-mid back rounded vowel in contrast to '' omega'' which represented the open-mid back rounded vowel and the digraph ''ου'' which represented the long close-mid back rounded vowel . In modern Greek, both omicron and omega represent the mid back rounded vowel or . Letters that arose from omicron include Roman O and Cyrillic O. The word literally means "little O" (''o mikron'') as opposed to "great O" (''ō mega''). In the system of Greek numerals, omicron has a value of 70. Use In addition to its use as an alphabetic letter, omicron is occasionally used in technical notation, but its use is limited since both upper case and lower case (Ο ο) are indistinguishable from the Latin letter "o" (O o) and difficult to distinguish from the Arabic numeral "ze ...

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant
Omicron (B.1.1.529) is a variant of SARS-CoV-2 first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by the Network for Genomics Surveillance in South Africa on 24 November 2021. It was first detected in Botswana and has spread to become the predominant variant in circulation around the world. Following the original BA.1 variant, several subvariants of Omicron have emerged: BA.2, BA.3, BA.4, and BA.5. Since October 2022, two subvariants of BA.5 named BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 have spread rapidly. Three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine provide protection against severe disease and hospitalisation caused by BA.1 and BA.2. The immunity effects of BA.2 are similar to those of BA.1. For three-dose vaccinated individuals, the BA.4 and BA.5 variants are more infectious than previous subvariants, making it likely, , for a new peak in COVID-19 infections to occur. __TOC__ Classification On 26 November, the WHO's Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution declared PANGO linea ...

Polynucleobacter Necessarius
''Polynucleobacter necessarius'' is a bacterium of the genus '' Polynucleobacter''. Bacteria These bacteria were discovered by the German microbiologist Klaus Heckmann in the cytoplasm of the ciliate ''Euplotes aediculatus'' and designated as ''Omikron'' (''Omicron'' in English literature). In 1987 ''Omikron'' / ''Omicron'' was scientifically described by Klaus Heckmann and Helmut Schmidt as the new species (and genus) ''Polynucleobacter necessarius''. Later free-living ''Polynucleobacter'' bacteria were discovered in the water columns of lakes and ponds. These planktonic, non-endosymbiontic members of the genus ''Polynucleobacter'' were initially assigned to a new subspecies of the species ''P. necessarius'' but later transferred to separate species. Since the last revision of the species, it contains exclusively obligate endosymbionts dwelling in cells of the ciliate ''Euplotes aediculatus'' and related species. This is in contrast to other species of the genus ''Polynucleobac ...

Greek Numerals
Greek numerals, also known as Ionic, Ionian, Milesian, or Alexandrian numerals, are a system of writing numbers using the letters of the Greek alphabet. In modern Greece, they are still used for ordinal numbers and in contexts similar to those in which Roman numerals are still used in the Western world. For ordinary cardinal numbers, however, modern Greece uses Arabic numerals. History The Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations' Linear A and Linear B alphabets used a different system, called Aegean numerals, which included number-only symbols for powers of ten:  = 1,  = 10,  = 100,  = 1000, and  = 10000. Attic numerals comprised another system that came into use perhaps in the 7th century BCE. They were acrophonic, derived (after the initial one) from the first letters of the names of the numbers represented. They ran  = 1,  = 5,  = 10,  = 100,  = 1,000, and   ...
