Othello (1980 Video Game)
''Othello'' is a 1980 video game developed and published by Atari, Inc. for its Atari Video Computer System (later called the Atari 2600). It is based on the variant of Reversi of the same name, originally created in 1971. The VCS game was programmed by Ed Logg and Carol Shaw. Gameplay The game broadly resembles the game originally developed by Parker Brothers in that it is set on an 8x8 board on which the player must capture squares by sandwiching their opponent's counters between their own. The game has four skill levels. Both one-player and competitive two-player modes are included in the game. The player can create their own problem by depositing pieces on the board, and select whether to go first or not. Ed Logg
George Edward "Ed" Logg (born 1948 in Seattle) is a retired American arcade video game designer, first employed at Atari, Inc. and later at Atari Games. He currently resides in San Jose, California. He was educated at University of California, Berkeley and also attended Stanford University. Career Logg was impressed with the Atari 2600 (then known as "Atari Video Computer System") and joined Atari's coin-op division and worked on ''Dirt Bike'', which was never released due to an unsuccessful field test. He co-developed with Ed Rotberg '' Super Breakout'' after hearing that Nolan Bushnell, co-founder of Atari, wanted '' Breakout'' updated. He co- developed the video game ''Asteroids'' with Lyle Rains. Reversi is a Abstract strategy game, strategy board game for two players, played on an 8×8 uncheckered board. It was invented in 1883. ''Othello'', a variant with a fixed initial setup of the board, was patented in 1971. Basics Two players compete, using 64 identical game pieces ("disks") that are light on one side and dark on the other. Each player chooses one color to use throughout the game. Players take turns placing one disk on an empty square, with their assigned color facing up. Bill Kunkel (journalist)
Bill Kunkel (July 21, 1950 – September 4, 2011) was a graphic novelist as well as pioneering professional wrestling and video game journalist and Video game criticism, critic from the 1970s until his death in the early 2010s. During his time working with the video game industry, Kunkel authored numerous strategy guides, co-designed several video games, served as an expert witness in three court cases, and taught courses in Game Design for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Kunkel served as the executive editor of ''Electronic Games Magazine'' and the editor-in-chief of ''Tips & Tricks'' magazine, writing columns and comics for several magazines and game sites. ''River Raid'' is a 1982 shoot 'em up video game developed and published by Activision for the Atari 2600. Designed by Carol Shaw, the player controls a fighter jet over the River of No Return in a raid behind enemy lines. The goal is to navigate the flight by destroying enemy tankers, helicopters, fuel depots and bridges without running out of fuel or crashing. Shaw had made games for Atari, Inc. before joining Activision and before working on ''River Raid''. Inspired by the game '' Scramble'' (1981), she set out to make a game that had a continuously scrolling screen. Carol Shaw (born 1955) is one of the first female Video game design, game designers and Programmer, programmers in the video game industry. She is best known for creating the Atari 2600 vertically scrolling shooter game ''River Raid'' (1982) for Activision. She worked for Atari, Inc. from 1978 to 1980, where she designed multiple games including ''3-D Tic-Tac-Toe'' (1978) and ''Video Checkers'' (1980), both for the Atari VCS before it was renamed to the 2600.
