''Number 17'' is a 1925 thriller play by the British writer Joseph Jefferson Farjeon. It premiered at the Winter Gardens Theatre in New Brighton before beginning a West End run of 209 performances, initially at the New Theatre before transferring to Wyndham's and then the Duke of York's Theatre. The original cast included Nicholas Hannen, Fred Groves, Leon M. Lion and Nora Swinburne. The following year he wrote a novelisation of the play, published by Hodder and Stoughton. Joseph Jefferson Farjeon
Joseph Jefferson Farjeon (4 June 1883 – 6 June 1955) was an English crime and mystery novelist, playwright and screenwriter. His father, brother and sister also developed successful careers in the literary world. His "Ben" novels were reissued in 2015 and 2016. ''Number Seventeen'' is a 1932 comedy thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring John Stuart, Anne Grey and Leon M. Lion. Cyril Butcher
Cyril George Butcher (31 July 1909 – 23 February 1987) was an English actor and director and longtime companion of Beverley Nichols. Biography Butcher was born on 31 July 1909, in Suffolk, England. In 1930, the magazine ''Film Weekly'' sponsored a pair of film acting scholarships. The two winners (Cyril Butcher and Aileen Despard) went on to appear in the now lost Alfred Hitchcock short '' An Elastic Affair'' and placed under contract by British International Pictures. In the early 1930s, he met novelist and playwright Beverley Nichols and they remained lifelong partners from then. Their friends were Hugh Walpole and Lord Berners, among others. In 1939 Butcher was living with Nichols and a valet at 1 Ellerdale Close, Hampstead, London. Gösta Stevens
Gösta Stevens (1 February 1897 – 24 September 1964) was a Swedish screenwriter and film director. Biography Gösta Stevens began his career as a journalist, but soon began writing couplets for local revues. Stevens offered Karl-Ewert Christenson his services before a summer revue at Kristallsalongen in 1924. To this he wrote the couplet ''Kom som du ä''. Soon, Ernst Rolf took notice of the young writer and Steven wrote many numbers for him. He was also the author of many of Björn Hodell's and Kar de Mumma's revues. Stevens also wrote other lyrics. Among other things, he wrote the lyrics to ''Sommarnatt'' (with music by Mogens Schrader), often sung by Jussi Björling. He also wrote the lyrics to ''I have become much better now in the old days'', sung by Zarah Leander.
