Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2
Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2 was a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser aircraft that was Water landing, ditched into Puget Sound, just off Maury Island at the Point Robinson Light, shortly after takeoff from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) on the morning of Monday, April 2, 1956. The plane flew over Normandy Park, Washington, Normandy Park heading southwest. All of those aboard survived the ditching and escaped the aircraft before it sank, but four passengers and one flight attendant subsequently died. Incident Flight 2 departed Sea-Tac at 08:06 Pacific Standard Time, PST on runway 20 (since removed), and its itinerary was south to Portland International Airport, Portland, then east to Chicago and New York City. The Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was a large long-range airliner developed from the Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, C-97 Stratofreighter military transport, itself a derivative of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, B-29 Superfortress. The Stratocruiser's first flight was on July 8, 1947. Its design was advanced for its day; its relatively innovative features (though neither completely new) included two passenger decks and a Cabin pressurization, pressurized cabin. It could carry up to 100 passengers on the main deck plus 14 in the lower deck lounge; typical seating was for 63 or 84 passengers or 28 berthed and five seated passengers. The Stratocruiser was larger than the Douglas DC-6 and Lockheed Constellation and cost more to buy and operate. Its reliability was poor, chiefly due to problems with the four 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines and structural and control problems with their propellers.
