North Korea–South Korea Football Rivalry
This article is about matches between North Korean and South Korean national football teams. History Beginning Along with troubled relations between North Korea and South Korea, their competitive spirit was also appeared in association football. South Korean government made its anti-communist football club Yangzee to develop the national football team more than North Korea's level just after North Korea left successful result in the 1966 FIFA World Cup by advancing to the quarter-finals, and South Korean football team won the 1970 Asian Games due to its effort. The first Korean derby occurred in the 1978 Asian Games final, and both countries shared the title after a 0–0 draw without penalty shoot-out. Yangzee FC
Yangzee Football Club ( ko, 양지 축구단) was a South Korean football club. Yangzee was a special football club to aim anti-communism, and was founded by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) on 29 March 1967, after the North Korea national football team reached the quarter-finals in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Under the then-head of the KCIA Kim Hyong-uk, the club was charged with improving the level of football in South Korea, recruiting the best talent of the time. Participation in the squad took the place of the mandatory military service requirement for Korean nationals, and the players lived and trained at the headquarters of the Intelligence Agency during their time with the team. They also received high salaries and long-term overseas training in return for intensive training. 2006 FIFA World Cup
The 2006 FIFA World Cup, also branded as Germany 2006, was the 18th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football world championship tournament. It was held from 9 June to 9 July 2006 in Germany, which had won the right to host the event in July 2000. Teams representing 198 national football associations from all six populated continents participated in the qualification process which began in September 2003. Thirty-one teams qualified from this process along with hosts Germany for the finals tournament. It was the second time that Germany staged the competition and the first as a unified country along with the former East Germany with Leipzig as a host city (the other was in 1974 in West Germany), and the 10th time that the tournament was held in Europe. 1993 Japan V Iraq Football Match
In the final round of matches of the final round of Asian qualification for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Japan and Iraq drew 2–2 in Doha, Qatar. If Japan had won the match, they would have qualified for the World Cup for the first time. Instead, Japan finished third in their group, allowing their arch-rivals South Korea to qualify instead. The Japanese refer to the match as the "Agony of Doha" (), whereas South Koreans, because the country's national football team only qualified in the final minutes of this match, refers to it as the "Miracle of Doha" (). The failure to qualify for the World Cup, and the dramatic way in which it happened, caused great disappointment for Japanese fans. Iraq National Football Team
The Iraq national football team ( ar, منتخب العراق لكرة القدم) represents Iraq in international football and is controlled by the Iraq Football Association (IFA), the governing body for football in Iraq. Iraq's usual home venue is the Basra International Stadium. Iraq have made one FIFA World Cup appearance in 1986, scoring their only goal against Belgium. They are one of eight current AFC nations to have won the AFC Asian Cup, claiming the title in 2007 in spite of difficult conditions and limited preparation. Iraq defeated some of the favourites in the competition including Australia, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. Ha Seok-ju
Ha Seok-ju (born February 20, 1968) is a South Korean football manager and former player. Ha was one of the few left-footed South Korean players at the time. International career He played for the South Korea national football team, and was a participant in 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup. In the 1998 World Cup, he played the first game against Mexico, scoring the opener with a free kick. However, he was sent off for an ill-advised tackle three minutes after his goal. South Korea conceded three goals after his exit. He also could not play the game against the Netherlands due to the punishment for his red card, and South Korea lost 5–0 during his absence. Hwang Sun-hong
Hwang Sun-hong (born 14 July 1968) is a South Korean former football player and current head coach of the South Korea national under-23 football team. He was the most notable South Korean striker in the 1990s and early 2000s. Club career After graduating from Konkuk University, Hwang decided not to enter the K League and left for Germany to begin his professional career. During a season, he played for the reserve team of Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals in the Oberliga Nordrhein, Germany's third division at the time. Next season, Hwang joined 2. Bundesliga side Wuppertaler SV, but he appeared only nine games due to a cruciate ligament injury. Hwang joined POSCO Atoms (currently Pohang Steelers) after returning to South Korea in June 1993. The 1994 FIFA World Cup was the 15th FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national soccer teams. 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship
The 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship was the eighth staging of the FIFA World Youth Championship, an international football competition organized by FIFA for men's youth national teams, and the eighth since it was established in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Tournament. The final tournament took place for the first time in Portugal, between 14 and 30 June 1991. Matches were played across five venues in as many cities: Faro, Braga, Guimarães, Porto and Lisbon.
