North East Victoria is an Australian Geographical Indication for a wine zone in the Australian state of Victoria. It includes five named wine regions: * Alpine Valleys * Beechworth * Glenrowan * King Valley * Rutherglen Geography The North East Victoria zone includes the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range and is bounded on the north side by the Murray River. A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g., a town, region, or country). The use of a geographical indication, as an indication of the product's source, is intended as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a good reputation due to its geographical origin. The City of Benalla was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city, which was surrounded by the Shire of Benalla, covered an area of , and existed from 1948 until 1994. History The Shire of Benalla was first incorporated as a road district on 4 September 1868, and became a shire on 3 September 1869. On 1 September 1948, after considerable growth of Benalla as a regional centre, the Central Riding was severed from the shire, to become the Borough of Benalla. Further land was transferred to the borough on 10 April 1956 and 1 February 1964, after which the borough was proclaimed a city by the Governor of Victoria, on 26 May 1965. The Shire of Yarrawonga was a local government area on the Murray River, in the Goulburn Valley region, about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1891 until 1994. History Yarrawonga was once part of the vast Echuca Road District, which formed in 1864 and becoming a shire in 1871. The Shire of Tungamah was a local government area in the Goulburn Valley region, about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1878 until 1994. History Tungamah was once part of the vast Echuca Road District, which formed in 1864, and became and a shire from 1871.
