Nigeria National Baseball Team
The Nigeria National Baseball Team is the national baseball team of Nigeria. The team represents Nigeria in international competitions and is ranked 6th in Africa (2020 ranking release), down from 2nd in Africa. And ranking number 70 in the world standing (2020 ranking release) Tournament record All-Africa Games In 1999 Nigeria won the silver medal by defeating every other national team except South Africa, to whom they lost in the final. In order, Nigeria won against Lesotho (14–3), Zimbabwe (12–11), Uganda (27–1) and Ghana (14–5) until a blowout loss to South Africa (1–19) in the championship game. Nigeria was again a dominant power in the 2003 Games held in Abuja, cruising to the final where they lost to South Africa 0–15 to earn the silver medal again. Baseball was scheduled to make a return to the All-Africa Games in Mozambique in 2011, but this did not occur as planned. The WBSC Africas, formerly known as, African Baseball and Softball Association (ABSA), is the governing body of baseball and softball within Africa. As of June 2011, there are 24 members. The confederation is responsible for operation of Baseball at the All-Africa Games. History The Africa Baseball and Softball Association (ABSA) was formed on June 8, 1990, in Lagos, Nigeria. The founding countries, 9 in number, were Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Lesotho, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Wande Olabisi
Babawande Onaolapo Olabisi is a former professional baseball player for the San Diego Padres. He played college baseball at Stanford University. Olabisi is the first Nigerian-born player to be selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft and the first to play affiliated baseball. Early life Olabisi was born in Lagos, Nigeria to Olagoke Olabisi and Juliet Olabisi. At the age of 5, the Olabisi Family moved to the ARAMCO Compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. in 2000, Olabisi represented the country in the Little League World Series where he was selected for the All-Star game and Home Run Derby. Randburg
Randburg is an area located in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Formerly a separate municipality, its administration devolved to the newly created City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, along with neighbouring Sandton and Roodepoort, in the late 1990s. All-Africa Games
The African Games, formally known as the All-Africa Games or the Pan African Games, are a continental multi-sport event held every four years, organized by the African Union (AU) with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC). All of the competing nations are from the African continent. The first Games were held in 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo. The International Olympic Committee granted official recognition as a continental multi-sport event, along with the Asian Games and Pan American Games. Abuja () is the capital and eighth most populous city of Nigeria. South Africa National Baseball Team
The South African national baseball team is the baseball team which represents the Republic of South Africa in international baseball competitions such as the World Baseball Classic and the Summer Olympics. The governing body of the team is the South African Baseball Union. Current roster History On 5 July 1931, the first inter-provincial match was played between the only two provincial teams, Transvaal and Natal, in front of a crowd of 4,000 spectators. Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. The objective of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the ball into the field of play, away from the other team's players, allowing its players to run the bases, having them advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called " runs".
