Nigel Gray
Nigel Gray (1947 – 30 July 2016) was an English record producer. His album credits include '' Outlandos d'Amour'' (1978), '' Reggatta de Blanc'' (1979), and '' Zenyatta Mondatta'' (1980) for the Police, '' Kaleidoscope'' (1980) and '' Juju'' (1981) for Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as five albums for Godley & Creme. Gray was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album for '' Zenyatta Mondatta'' (1981) and also won two Grammys for producer of Best Rock Performance (" Don't Stand So Close to Me") and Best Rock Instrumental ("Behind My Camel"). Gray was revered by Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich for his work on the Police's ''Reggatta de Blanc''. Gray's production on Siouxsie and the Banshees' records with guitarist John McGeoch was also a reference for Godrich during the recording of Radiohead's "There There". John McGeoch
John Alexander McGeoch (25 August 1955 – 4 March 2004) was a Scottish musician and songwriter. He is best known as the guitarist of the rock bands Magazine (1977-1980) and Siouxsie and the Banshees (1980-1982). He has been described as one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. In 1996 he was listed by '' Mojo'' in their "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" for his work on the Siouxsie and the Banshees song " Spellbound". Signature characteristics of his playing style included inventive arpeggios, string harmonics, the uses of flanger and an occasional disregard for conventional scales. He was also a member of the bands Visage (1979-1980), the Armoury Show (1983-1986) and Public Image Ltd (1986-1992). Hazel O'Connor
Hazel Thereasa O'Connor (born 16 May 1954) is a British singer-songwriter and actress. She became famous in the early 1980s with hit singles " Eighth Day", " D-Days" and " Will You?" She also starred in the 1980 film '' Breaking Glass''. Career O'Connor was born in Coventry, England. She is the daughter of a soldier from Galway who settled in England after the Second World War to work in a car plant. Tank (band)
Tank (stylized as TANK) is the name of two British heavy metal bands, both of which stem from a band formed in 1980 by Algy Ward, a former member of The Damned. The original band is known as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement. Tank was often compared to Motörhead as both bands were trios fronted by singing bassists, and played a loose, almost punk-styled metal music with often colourful lyrics. Girlschool
Girlschool are a British rock band that formed in the new wave of British heavy metal scene in 1978. Frequently associated with contemporaries Motörhead, they are the longest-running all-female rock band, still active after more than 40 years. Formed from a school band called Painted Lady, Girlschool enjoyed strong media exposure and commercial success in the UK in the early 1980s with three albums of ' punk-tinged metal' and a few singles, but lost their momentum in the following years. In the 1990s and 2000s, Girlschool focused on shows and tours and made few studio albums. The Professionals (band)
The Professionals are an English punk rock band active from 1979 to early 1982 and again from 2015. They were formed by ex-Sex Pistols members Steve Jones and Paul Cook after that band's demise. Career The Professionals were formed in 1979 by guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, both formerly of the Sex Pistols. In the previous year, Johnny Rotten had left the Sex Pistols, and both Cook and Jones had sung lead for the late Sex Pistols recordings "Silly Thing" and "Lonely Boy". For these recordings, Lightning Raiders bassist Andy Allan was employed as a session musician. After the Sex Pistols officially split and broke ties with manager Malcolm McLaren, this line-up was resurrected as the Professionals, and signed to Virgin Records, the same label as the Sex Pistols. The Work (band)
The Work were an English post-punk rock group, founded in 1980 by multi-instrumentalist/composer Tim Hodgkinson and guitarist/composer Bill Gilonis, with bass guitarist Mick Hobbs and drummer Rick Wilson. The band toured Europe in 1981 and 1982, and recorded their first album, '' Slow Crimes'' in 1982. After a tour of Japan later that year and releasing ''Live in Japan'', the band split up. In 1989, the Work reformed to record ''Rubber Cage'' and performed throughout Europe between 1989 and 1994, releasing another album, ''See'' in 1992. ''Slow Crimes'' is a 1982 studio album by English post-punk rock group the Work. It is their debut album and was recorded between September 1981 – January 1982 in London, Switzerland and Belgium. It was released on LP in April 1982 by Woof Records in the United Kingdom, and follows on from "I Hate America" / "Fingers & Toes" / "Duty", their first single recorded and released in 1981. ''Slow Crimes'' was reissued in 1992 on CD by Megaphone Records in the United States with four extra tracks: the three tracks from the band's first single, plus "Houdini", originally released in 1982 on the '' Recommended Records Sampler''. Latin Quarter is a British band formed in 1983. They had one top 20 single "Radio Africa" in the United Kingdom. The British radio were cautious in the eighties to play their singles because of their political based lyrics. They became more popular in Germany and in northern Europe. Latin Quarter released their latest album, ''Releasing the Sheep'', on 29 October 2021. Their sound mixes elements of pop, rock, reggae and folk with largely political based lyrics. The Lotus Eaters (band)
The Lotus Eaters are an English new wave band formed in 1982 in Liverpool. Their debut single, " The First Picture of You", became a hit in the UK and in continental Europe, notably France, Italy, Belgium and Spain. History Formation and success In September 1982, Peter Coyle and Jeremy "Jem" Kelly met for the first time. Kelly had been guitarist in the Dance Party with Michael Head and co-founded the Wild Swans in 1980. Coyle had previously been in the Jass Babies, who had recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show in 1981. After an invitation to record a Peel session, a number of new songs were created. Joined on keyboards by Kelly's fellow ex-Wild Swans member Ged Quinn, drummer Alan Wills and bassist Phil Lucking, the session was recorded in October 1982 and included "The First Picture of You". L (Godley & Creme Album)
''L'' is the second album by Godley & Creme. It was released in 1978. At 34 minutes, it is less than a third as long as the group's previous effort, the ill-received triple concept album ''Consequences'' (1977). Despite this, ''L'' was also not received well commercially. The songs contain much variation and artistry, dissonances, complex time signatures and melodies, poetic lyrics, and some echoes from Frank Zappa's ''Over-Nite Sensation'' (1973). Zappa is even name-checked on the song "Art School Canteen." The album was played almost completely by Godley and Creme, except for saxophones, and a brief vocal cameo by Paul Gambaccini. The lyrics retained the satirical stance of some 10cc material, with songs such as "The Sporting Life" and "Art School Canteen", which deal with suicide and art school angst.
