Native American Hip Hop
Native American Hip Hop is hip hop culture practiced by people of (often urban) Native American heritage, including Canadian First Nation hip hop artists. It is not a specific form of hip hop but varies in style along the lines of hip hop in general. Native Americans have been present in hip hop culture since its inception as breakdancers, DJs, rappers, and graffiti artists. The Native American contribution to hip hop can occasionally be veiled by the ethnic umbrella term of Hispanic or Latino, terms that may refer to Native Americans in certain contexts. Hip hop has grown in popularity not only in urban settings but also in reservations since it has become ubiquitous on television and radio. Political activism and its expression in art have been of great influence due too many social issues present in indigenous communities. Funkdoobiest
Funkdoobiest was an American hip hop group from Los Angeles, California, United States, composed of rappers Jason "Son Doobie" Vasquez, Tyrone "Tomahawk Funk" Pacheco and DJ Ralph "Tha Phunky Mexican" Medrano. They are members of the Soul Assassins collective. The group has released four studio albums. Their third LP, ''The Troubleshooters'', was recorded and released without any participation of Tomahawk Funk due to his departure from the group. The group's most successful hit single, "Bow Wow Wow" from their debut album ''Which Doobie U B?'', peaked at number 89 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 singles chart in the United States. They appeared in the soundtrack to Allison Anders' 1994 film '' Mi Vida Loca'' with the song "The Good Hit". James Lowery (born June 26, 1974), also known as Anybody Killa, or ABK, is an American rapper from Detroit, Michigan, United States, whose stage persona is that of a Native American warrior. He was signed to Psychopathic Records, but is now under his own label Native World Inc. Prior to performing as ''ABK'' he performed as Native Funk. Early years (1980s) Lowery was raised on the east side of Detroit. His parents were from Pembroke, North Carolina. Lowery's father was a preacher. Christian Parrish Takes the Gun, known professionally as Supaman is an Apsáalooke rapper and ghost/thunder dancer who was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in Crow Agency, Montana. The child of parents who struggled with alcoholism, Supaman spent part of his childhood in foster care before being raised by his mother. He began DJing in the 90s after hearing a Litefoot song (with the two touring together in 1999), In the fourth grade, Christian began dancing at powwows. Frank Waln or Oyate Teca Obmani ("Walks With Young People") is a Sicangu Lakota rapper and activist. His first solo album, ''Born Ready'', was released in 2017, followed by ''The Bridge'' the same year. He has been awarded three Native American Music Awards and received five nominations, both individually and with his group Nake Nula Waun. Many of Waln's songs tackle Native American social issues. Waln grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation and first began listening to hip hop as a teenager. He later graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a B.A. in Audio Arts and Acoustics, and also received a Gates Millennium Scholarship. Drezus (drē-zəˈs; born Jeremiah Manitopyes; August 28, 1982) is Plains Cree rapper and activist based in Calgary, Alberta. Drezus' accomplishments in the field of music include awards for Best Music Video, Best Producer/Engineer, Best Rap/Hip Hop Album, and Indigenous Entertainer of the Year. These awards followed the success of his album, ''Indian Summer'', released in the summer of 2014. However, Manitopyes' life was not always filled with awards and recognition. Anthony Peaks (December 26, 1964 – January 22, 2010), better known as Apache, was an American rapper. Apache emerged from New Jersey in the late 1980s as a front man for the Flavor Unit, a hip-hop group. He first appeared on the Flavor Unit album, ''The 45 King Presents The Flavor Unit'', in 1990. Apart from his individual records, he also featured on the albums of Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, 2Pac and Fat Joe. Apache signed with Tommy Boy/ Warner Bros. The Flavor Unit is a crew of emcees and DJs from New York City and Northern New Jersey. It is now known as the Unit. The original version of the crew centered on producer the 45 King. It was Mark's connections to radio personalities DJ Red Alert and DJ Chuck Chillout that initially got the crew noticed, but the original members also all had formidable rhyme skills and wrote streetwise lyrics. The 45 King eventually fell into serious drug abuse and Queen Latifah took over the name; it became her umbrella organization. Russell Tyrone Jones (November 15, 1968 – November 13, 2004), better known by his stage name Ol' Dirty Bastard (often abbreviated as ODB), was an American rapper. He was one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group primarily from Staten Island, New York City, which rose to mainstream prominence with its 1993 debut album ''Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)''.
