Douglas, Alaska
Douglas is a community on Douglas Island in southeastern Alaska, directly across the Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau. History Douglas Island was originally a border of the Auke people’s and Taku people’s territory. It was not usually used for year-round settlement, but rather as a place to spend the summer, or at times a place for battles. Some historical reports indicate an early settler to the area may be credited for the naming of Douglas Island. In 1880 gold was discovered in Juneau, Alaska, across the narrow Gastineau Channel, drawing in all kinds of people looking to strike it rich. In 1881 two towns sprouted up on Douglas Island: Treadwell and Douglas. Treadwell was the community for the miners, with its own entertainment, pool, and bar. The National Historic Landmarks in Alaska represent Alaska's history from its Russian heritage to its statehood. There are 50 National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) in the state. The United States National Historic Landmark program is operated under the auspices of the National Park Service, and recognizes structures, districts, objects, and similar resources according to a list of criteria of national significance. Major themes include Alaska's ancient cultures, Russian heritage, and role in World War II, but other stories are represented as well. Chicken Ridge Historic District
The Chicken Ridge Historic District is a residential historic district in Juneau, Alaska. It is located in an area long known as Chicken Ridge (probably for the ptarmigan and grouse found there in abundance), and has since the early 20th century been one of Juneau's finest neighborhoods. It includes properties along Seventh Street, Basin Road above Seventh, Goldbelt Avenue, Dixon Street, and Main Street above Sixth. Most of the district's 75 contributing and 26 non-contributing properties are Craftsman in style, although the Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival are also well represented. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Taku River
The Taku River ( Lingít: ''T'aaḵu Héeni'') is a river running from British Columbia, Canada, to the northwestern coast of North America, at Juneau, Alaska. The river basin spreads across . The Taku is a very productive salmon river and its drainage basin is primarily wilderness. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Taku Indians controlled the trade routes on the river and compelled natives of the Interior to use them as middle-men, instead of allowing trade directly with white settlers. The Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post called Fort Durham, also known as Fort Taku, near the mouth of the Taku River in the early 1840s to take advantage of the natural trade route. However, by 1843, Fort Durham had been abandoned as unprofitable. Although a major river, the Taku's name does not extend to its headwaters. Sentinel Island (Alaska)
The Sentinel Island Light is a lighthouse in Alaska adjacent to Lynn Canal. Location The Sentinel Island Light is at the northern entrance to the Favorite Channel, between the mainland and Lincoln and Shelter Islands. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 2, 2002. History On August 5, 1910, the steamship ''Princess May'' grounded on rocks just north of Sentinel Island. Although the ship was successfully taken off the rocks on September 5, 1910, photographic images showing the ship pointing in the air at low tide became famous.Turner, ''Pacific Princesses'', at pages 109 to 112. The 1930s lighthouse, replacing an earlier wooden structure, was built for $35,310. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Douglas Island
Douglas Island is a tidal island in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is part of the city and borough of Juneau, just west of downtown Juneau and east of Admiralty Island. It is separated from mainland Juneau by the Gastineau Channel, and contains the communities of Douglas and West Juneau. History Douglas Island was named for John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury, by Captain George Vancouver. Joseph Whidbey, master of during Vancouver's expedition, was the first to sight it in 1794. In 1886, people began to travel to Douglas Island to settle near the developing Treadwell gold mine. Juneau Downtown Historic District
The Juneau Downtown Historic District encompasses the historic commercial heart of the city of Juneau, Alaska. It extends along South Franklin Street, from the cruise terminal in the south to Second Street in the north, and westward along Second and Front Streets to Main Street. This area was the center of Juneau's economic activity from its founding in 1880 as a gold mining camp, through its growth into an urbanized area in the early 20th century, including its eventual designation as the territorial capital in 1906. In the early days of the gold mining camp business was centered in the area bounded by Front, Main and South Franklin, with maritime activities in particular eventually extending further south along the shore of the Gastineau Channel by making land using mine tailings. The early buildings have relatively utilitarian architecture, while those of the early 20th century are somewhat more ornate, with Late Victorian details.
