13 (thirteen) is the natural number following 12 (number), 12 and preceding 14 (number), 14. Folklore surrounding the number 13 appears in many cultures around the world: one theory is that this is due to the cultures employing lunar-solar calendars (there are approximately 12.41 lunations per solar year, and hence 12 "true months" plus a smaller, and often portentous, thirteenth month). ''Number 13'' is a comic strip that appeared in the UK comic ''The Beano''. It made its first appearance in issue 2333, dated 4 April 1987, and ran until 1997, although it became sporadic during the last few years. A couple of one-off appearances followed up until issue, dated 14 December 2002. It was originally drawn by John Geering. It returned in January 2014, written and drawn by Alan Ryan. Number 13 (1922 Film)
In 1922, Alfred Hitchcock obtained his first shot at directing for Gainsborough Pictures with the film ''Number 13'' (or ''Mrs. Peabody'') but due to financial difficulties, it was never completed. Clare Greet and Ernest Thesiger were to star as husband and wife. The story was about low-income residents of a building, financed by The Peabody Trust, founded by American banker-philanthropist George Foster Peabody, to offer affordable housing to needy Londoners. However, the film's budget fell apart, and it was pulled from production after only a handful of scenes were shot. Hitchcock rarely, if ever, spoke about his first directing project, until his biographer, Donald Spoto, asked him about life in the early twenties, and his first films. On one occasion, he said that it was a "somewhat chastening experience". ''Number 13'' is a short film which is part of the British supernatural anthology series ''A Ghost Story for Christmas''. Written by Justin Hopper, produced by Richard Fell, and directed by Pier Wilkie, it is based on the ghost story of the same name by M. R. James, first published in the collection ''Ghost Stories of an Antiquary'' (1904), and first Broadcast on BBC Four on 22 December 2006. It stars Greg Wise as Prof. Anderson, an academic who, whilst assigned to authenticate papers which appear to date back to the Reformation, stays in room 12 of a drafty hotel which has no room 13 in a small English cathedral town. When he awakes one night to discover that the door to room 13 has mysteriously appeared, he decides to investigate, with fearful consequences. Number 13-class Battleship
The ''Number 13''-class battleship was a planned class of four fast battleships to be built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the 1920s. The ships never received any names, being known only as ''Numbers 13–16''. They were intended to reinforce Japan's " eight-eight fleet" of eight battleships and eight battlecruisers after the United States announced a major naval construction program in 1919. The ''Number 13'' class was designed to be superior to all other existing battleships, planned or building. After the signing of the Washington Naval Treaty in 1922, they were cancelled in November 1923 before construction could begin. Design and background By 1918, the Navy had gained approval for an "eight-six" fleet, all ships under eight years old. However, having four large battleships and four battlecruisers on order put an enormous financial strain on Japan, which was spending about a third of its national budget on the Navy. "Number 13" is a ghost story by British writer M. R. James, included in his first collection ''Ghost Stories of an Antiquary'' (1904). Plot summary While researching church history in Viborg, Denmark, in particular the events of the Reformation, the narrator's cousin Anderson stays in room Number 12 of a local inn, the "Golden Lion". Once in his room, he notices that the space seems to grow smaller and his furniture sometimes vanishes. He hears dancing in the room next door, which he notices from its door marking is Number 13; however, upon discussing the matter with the innkeeper, he learns that there is no such room with that number in the Golden Lion, as it is considered bad luck. Anderson asks the innkeeper to visit his room at night. While talking, the protagonist and the innkeeper hear ominous singing in the room next door.
