Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel (; population: 22,344 in 2004) is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Since 2010 it is part of the new municipality of Zuidplas. It is situated along the Hollandsche IJssel river, across from the town Ouderkerk aan den IJssel. Within the boundaries of this municipality lies the lowest point of the Netherlands: below Normaal Amsterdams Peil, Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (mean summer sea level in Amsterdam). It is the hometown of Miss Universe 1989, Angela Visser. History Nieuwerkerk was probably first formed circa 1250. Floris V, Count Of Holland
Floris V (24 June 1254 – 27 June 1296) reigned as Count of Holland and Zeeland from 1256 until 1296. His life was documented in detail in the Rijmkroniek by Melis Stoke, his chronicler. He is credited with a mostly peaceful reign, modernizing administration, policies beneficial to trade, generally acting in the interests of his peasants at the expense of nobility, and reclaiming land from the sea. His dramatic murder, said by some to have been arranged by King Edward I of England and Guy, Count of Flanders, made him a hero in Holland. The 1953 North Sea flood () was a major flood caused by a heavy storm surge that struck the Netherlands, north-west Belgium, England and Scotland. Most sea defences facing the surge were overwhelmed, resulting in extensive flooding. The storm and flooding occurred during the night of Saturday, 31 January to the morning of 1 February 1953. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm caused a storm tide of the North Sea. The combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure caused the sea to flood land up to above mean sea level. Realising that such infrequent events could reoccur, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom carried out large studies on strengthening of coastal defences. John III Van De Werve, Lord Of Hovorst
Jan van de Werve (Antwerp, 1522–1576), Lord of Hovorst, Vierseldijk and Boechout was a member of the nobility and of the civic government of Antwerp. Family Jan was the son of Gerald van de Werve, 5th Lord of Hovorst. He married three times with ladies of noble birth: 2nd with Claire Rockox. His uncle Martin was married to Mary of Ursel, sister of his brother-in-law: Lancelot II of Ursel. He became the uncle of Nicolaas II Rockox and Jacobus Dassa, all mayors of Antwerp. His final marriage was to Margareth van Baexem van Achterluyten. He was succeeded as Lord of Hovorst by his son Jan van de Werve, 7th Lord of Hovorst, who died in 1622.
