Newtownards
Newtownards (; ) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, 10 miles (16 km) east of Belfast, on the Ards Peninsula. It is in the Civil parishes in Ireland, civil parish of Newtownards (civil parish), Newtownards and the historic Barony (Ireland), baronies of Ards Lower and Castlereagh Lower. Newtownards is in the Ards and North Down Borough Council, Ards and North Down Borough. The population was 29,677 in the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 Census. Biography Early life Jocelyn was the eldest son of Thomas Jocelyn of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, and Anne Bray, daughter of Thomas Bray of City and Liberty of Westminster, Westminster. His paternal grandfather was Earl of Roden#Jocelyn Baronets, of Hyde Hall (1665), Sir Robert Jocelyn, 1st Baronet, a High Sheriff of Hertfordshire. The Jocelyn are recorded as living in Sawbridgeworth since at least the fifteenth century: notable members of the family included Ralph Josselyn of Hyde Hall (died 1478), who was twice Lord Mayor of London. Lodge Evans de Montmorency, 1st Viscount Frankfort de Montmorency PC (26 January 1747 – 21 September 1822), known as Lodge Morres until 1800 and as The Lord Frankfort between 1800 and 1816, was an Irish politician. Background Born Lodge Morres, he was the son of Redmond Morres and Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Lodge. Hervey Morres, 1st Viscount Mountmorres and Sir William Morres, 1st Baronet, were his uncles. Political career Morres was elected a member of the Irish House of Commons for Inistioge in 1768, a seat he held until 1770, and later represented Bandon Bridge between 1776 and 1796, Ennis between 1796 and 1797, and Dingle between 1798 and 1800. He was sworn of the Irish Privy Council in 1796 and served as a Lord of the Treasury between 1796 and 1806. William Brabazon Ponsonby, 1st Baron Ponsonby (of Imokilly), (15 September 17445 November 1806) was a leading Irish Whig politician, being a member of the Irish House of Commons, and, after 1800, of the United Kingdom parliament. Ponsonby was the son of the Hon. John Ponsonby, the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, and Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, daughter of the 3rd Duke of Devonshire. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor of Ireland in 1784. He served as Joint Postmaster-General of Ireland (1784–1789). Political career Ponsonby was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Admiral of the Fleet Sir James Fownes Somerville (17 July 1882 – 19 March 1949) was a Royal Navy admiral of the fleet. He served in the First World War as fleet wireless officer for the Mediterranean Fleet where he was involved in providing naval support for the Gallipoli Campaign. Sir William Evans Morres, 1st Baronet (1710 – 11 October 1774) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Biography Morres was the son of Francis Morris, of Castle Morres, County Kilkenny, by Catherine Evans, daughter of Sir William Evans, 1st Baronet. His younger brother was Hervey Morres, who was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Mountmorres in 1765. Morres was High Sheriff of Kilkenny City in 1736 and High Sheriff of County Kilkenny in 1741. He was knighted on 28 May 1755. He represented Kilkenny City in the Irish House of Commons from 1752 to 1768, before sitting for Newtownards between 1769 and his death in 1774.
