National Biodiversity Centre (Singapore)
The National Biodiversity Centre (: NBC; Chinese: 国家生物多样性中心; ; ) is a branch of the National Parks Board and serves as Singapore's one-stop centre for biodiversity-related information and activities. It manages all available information and data on biodiversity in Singapore. Diverse biodiversity-related information and data are currently generated, stored and updated by different organisations and individuals. The National Biodiversity Centre will maximize the usefulness of such information and data by linking them in a single meta-database. Having complete and up-to-date information is crucial for many decision-making processes involving biodiversity. This hub of biodiversity information and data at the National Biodiversity Centre will also allow knowledge gaps to be better identified and addressed. National Parks Board
The National Parks Board (NParks) is a statutory board under the Ministry of National Development of the Government of Singapore. History In November 1989, Minister of National Development, S. Dhanabalan, presented the National Parks Bill in Parliament to form a body to manage the three parks, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Fort Canning Park and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, in Singapore. In March 1990, Minister of State for National Development, Lee Boon Yang introduced the National Parks Bill in Parliament to form the National Parks Board as a statutory board. On 6 June 1990, the National Parks Board was formed to manage the three parks. On 1 July 1996, the Parks and Recreation Department was merged with the National Parks Board. Mah Bow Tan
Mah Bow Tan ( zh, s=马宝山, p=Mǎ Bǎoshān; born 12 September 1948) is a Singaporean former People's Action Party politician who served as Leader of the House between 2007 and 2011, Minister for National Development between 1999 and 2011, Minister for the Environment from 1993 to 1995, and Minister for Communications between 1991 and 1999. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Tampines East ward of Tampines GRC between 1988 and 2015. Banded Leaf Monkey
The Raffles' banded langur (''Presbytis femoralis''), also known as the banded leaf monkey or banded surili, is a species of primate in the family Cercopithecidae. It is endemic to Singapore and southern Peninsular Malaysia. The species underwent taxonomic revisions in 2019 and 2020, in which two former subspecies were elevated to separate species. As a result, the Raffles' banded langur meets the criteria for being listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. It is mainly threatened by habitat loss. Taxonomy The taxonomy of ''Presbytis femoralis'' underwent several changes. Up until 2019, three subspecies of ''P. femoralis'' were recognized: ''P. f. femoralis'' (nominate), ''P. f. percura'' (the East Sumatran banded langur), and ''P. f. robinsoni'' (Robinson's banded langur). The oriental pied hornbill (''Anthracoceros albirostris'') is an Indo-Malayan pied hornbill, a large canopy-dwelling bird belonging to the family Bucerotidae. Two other common names for this species are Sunda pied hornbill (''convexus'') and Malaysian pied hornbill. The oriental pied hornbill is considered to be among the smallest and most common of the Asian hornbills. It has the largest distribution in the genus and occurs in the Indian Subcontinent and throughout Southeast Asia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Its diet includes fruit, insects, shellfish, small reptiles and small mammals and birds including their eggs. Toa Payoh Town Park
Toa Payoh Town Park is located at the junction of Lorong 2 Toa Payoh and Lorong 6 Toa Payoh in Singapore. Park size is 4.8 hectares. The Park is currently closed for six years as part of the redevelopment of the Toa Payoh Sports Hub. History The park, previously known as Toa Payoh Town Garden, was completed in 1973. Its main features are an observation tower and a landscaped pond with willow trees. In the seventies, the town garden was a favored venue for outdoor wedding photography. The observation tower is now not open to the public and there has been no plans announced by the National Parks Board to reopen it (as of 1 September 2011). There is a fountain pool installed around the tower. The Toa Payoh Town Garden was partially closed in 1999 to make way for a temporary bus interchange. Kent Ridge Park is a 47-hectare public park located in Kent Ridge, Singapore, between the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Science Park. The scarlet skimmer or ruddy marsh skimmer, ''Crocothemis servilia'', is a species of dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, native to east and southeast Asia and introduced to Jamaica, Florida, and Hawaii.
