Mount Vernon East (Metro-North Station)
Mount Vernon East station is a commuter rail station on the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line, located in Mount Vernon, New York. The station is the first station north of the junction where the New Haven Line splits from the Harlem Line and is the northernmost station on the line before it changes from third rail power to overhead catenary power, which takes place between the Mount Vernon East and Pelham stations. Station layout The station has two high-level side platforms, each 850 feet (10 cars) long, serving the outer of the line's four tracks. The tracks are slightly below ground in a cut; a footbridge connects the platforms and entrances. The main entrances are located on Elm Avenue on the north side of the tracks, and in a parking lot off 1st Street on the south side; a staircase also connects the east end of the southern (northbound) platform to Fulton Avenue. It is officially at North Village Avenue and Front Street north of Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre, New York, but the station property spreads west to North Center Avenue and east to North Park Avenue. M2 (railcar)
The M2, M4 and M6 were three similar series of electric multiple unit rail cars produced by the Budd Company (M2), Tokyu Car Corporation (M4), and Morrison-Knudsen (M6) for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT). Initially branded as the Cosmopolitans, the cars were later more popularly known under their model names, M2 (1970s cars), M4 (1980s cars), M6 (1990s cars). They ran on the New Haven Line (then part of Penn Central, now a part of Metro-North) for most of their service life. The M4s and M6s were retired by Metro-North in 2015, followed by the last M2s in 2018. They have been largely replaced by new M8 railcars.
