Montreal Manic
The Montreal Manic or the Manic de Montréal were a professional soccer team based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, that played in the North American Soccer League. The Montreal Manic were brought back in 2020 by Canadian businessman Gary Gaul as an academy with boys and girls from U5 – U23. History "Le Manic" as they were called by the locals, were Montreal's first professional soccer team since the NASL's Montreal Olympique folded in 1973. The team was named after a river in northeast Quebec, the Manicouagan, the site of a massive hydroelectric project. The Montreal Manic competed from 1981 to 1983, with their home field being the Montreal Olympic Stadium. Previous to Montreal, the team played as the Philadelphia Fury from 1978 through 1980 and ten Fury players as well as manager Eddie Firmani moved to Montreal for 1981. Carmine Marcantonio (born 21 November 1954 in Castel di Sangro, Italy) is a Canadian retired soccer player who earned two caps for the national team between 1976 and 1980. Club career Marcantonio played in the National Soccer League (NSL) in 1973 with Toronto Italia for three seasons. In 1976, he played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with Toronto Metros-Croatia, where he won the Soccer Bowl. The following season he returned to play with Toronto Italia. in 1978, he returned to the NASL to play with the Washington Diplomats. John McGrane
John McGrane (born October 12, 1952) is a Scottish-Canadian former soccer player who played as a defender. Starting his career at Hamilton City, he went on to spend nine years playing in the North American Soccer League for the Los Angeles Aztecs, the Montreal Manic, the Chicago Sting, and the Minnesota Strikers. He retired from playing in 1985. McGrane competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and won 12 caps with the Canada national team. Gerard "Gerry" Gray (born 20 January 1961) is a former soccer player. Born in Scotland, he represented and coached the Canadian national soccer team. Club career Born and raised in Scotland, Gray moved to Toronto, Ontario with his family at the age of 12 and played for several teams in Canada and the United States in the NASL. In 1982 Gray was named to the NASL's first North American All-Star team. Gray also played indoor soccer in the original MISL for the Chicago Sting as well as the Tacoma Stars. Gordon Alec Hill (born 1 April 1954) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League for Millwall, Manchester United, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers, and was capped six times for the England national team. Mehdi Cerbah
Mehdi Cerbah (3 April 1953 – 29 October 2021) was an Algerian footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Cerbah spent most of his career playing for Algerian sides USM Alger, JS Kabylie and RC Kouba. He played one season of indoor football in Canada, after signing in January 1983 with NASL side Montreal Manic. He returned to Algeria and finished his career in RC Kouba until 1986. Cerbah won 57 caps for the Algeria national team, including three appearances at the 1982 FIFA World Cup finals, which included a famous victory over West Germany. Dale William Mitchell (born April 21, 1958) is a Canadian former professional soccer striker who played for several North American teams in the 1980s and 1990s. He made 55 appearances for the Canada national team and scored a then national record 19 goals. He coached the Canada national team from May 2007 until March 27, 2009. The 1983 NASL Grand Prix of Indoor Soccer was an indoor soccer tournament staged by four franchises of the North American Soccer League. Overview The NASL franchises from Fort Lauderdale, Tampa Bay, Montreal, and Tulsa opted to play the Grand Prix in early 1983 as a makeshift indoor season, because for various reasons, the eight other NASL clubs had chosen to forego playing a full 1982–83 NASL indoor season. Three of those eight teams (Chicago, Golden Bay and San Diego) had joined the Major Indoor Soccer League for 1982-83 season, while the remaining five squads chose to sit out winter indoor play completely. The tournament consisted of three weeks of double round-robin play for the purpose of seeding, followed by a Championship weekend at the Forum in Montreal. The Montreal Expos (french: link=no, Les Expos de Montréal) were a Canadian professional baseball team based in Montreal, Quebec. The Expos were the first Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise located outside the United States. They played in the National League (NL) East division from 1969 until 2004.
