Model 96 Store
The McDonnell Model 96 store was a disposable weapons/fuel pod developed for the F-101A Voodoo under development by the Strategic Air Command in the early 1950s. Development Originally developed as an escort fighter for early Strategic Air Command bombers such as the B-36, the B-47, and the B-50, the mission of the F-101 was changed to that of a "strategic fighter" with equal emphasis on bomber escort and nuclear weapons delivery. This change took place in late 1952, while the F-101A was still under development. At that time, small nuclear weapons suitable for high-speed external carriage did not exist. The MK 5 and MK 7 weapons were initially considered for use with the new F-101. However, the existing MK 5 bomb would have produced excessive drag and the MK 7, already deployed by F-84 units, was restricted to a maximum carriage speed of Mach 0.82, prohibiting full use of the high-speed performance of the ''Voodoo''. The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo is a supersonic jet fighter which served the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Initially designed by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation as a long-range bomber escort (known as a ''penetration fighter'') for the USAF's Strategic Air Command (SAC), the Voodoo was instead developed as a nuclear-armed fighter-bomber for the USAF's Tactical Air Command (TAC), and as a photo reconnaissance aircraft based on the same airframe. Escort Fighter
The escort fighter was a concept for a fighter aircraft designed to escort bombers to and from their targets. An escort fighter needed range long enough to reach the target, loiter over it for the duration of the raid to defend the bombers, and return. A number of twin-engined heavy fighters with high fuel capacity were designed for escort duties prior to the outbreak of World War II. Such heavy fighters largely failed in their intended escort role during the war, as they were commonly outmaneuvered by more agile single-engined fighters. As the war progressed, longer-range fighter designs and the use of drop tanks allowed single-engined fighters to perform escort duties.
