The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile ( es, Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores) is the cabinet-level administrative office in charge of planning, directing, coordinating, executing, controlling and informing the foreign policy formulated by the President of Chile. It is located in the Edificio José Miguel Carrera at Plaza de la Constitución (Santiago de Chile), Plaza de la Constitución (''Constitution Square''), in downtown Santiago. The present Minister of Foreign Affairs (who is also known colloquially as ''Chancellor'') is Antonia Urrejola. History The office was first organized in 1812, during the Chilean War of Independence, War of Independence, under the name of Foreign Affairs Secretariat. It was abolished in 1814, after the Battle of Rancagua, when the Spanish government was re-established. Francisco Freire
Francisco Freire Caldera (1839 – July 30, 1900) was a Chilean lawyer, farmer and politician. Early life Francisco was born in Santiago in 1839, the son of Manuela Caldera Mascaiano and Gen. Ramón Freire Serrano, one of the principal leaders of the liberal '' Pipiolo'' movement who served as the Chilean head of state on of several occasions before the War of the Confederation. He studied at the National Institute and the University of Chile before being sworn in as a lawyer on December 22, 1863. Career He served as deputy for Illapel from 1882 to 1885, serving on the Qualification Commissions of Powers and Budget. He was a substitute senator for Tarapacá from 1885 to 1891, but was disqualified for having accepted an administrative position. Aníbal Zañartu
Aníbal Zañartu Zañartu (; 12 April 1847 – 1 February 1902) was a Chilean political figure. He served several times as minister and, for a brief time, as vice president in 1901. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life He was born in Concepción, the son of Miguel José de Zañartu Santa María and of Juana de Mata Zañartu. After completing his studies in his native city, he graduated as a lawyer from the Universidad de Chile on July 19, 1870. Zañartu married Amelia Iñiguez Vicuña and they had six children. He owned a carbon mine in the Dichato beach, near Tomé. Aníbal Zañartu was of Basque descent. Career He started his political career as plenipotentiary ambassador to Ecuador, in 1880, during the War of the Pacific. In 1882 he was elected as a deputy for San Fernando. José Manuel Balmaceda
José Manuel Emiliano Balmaceda Fernández (; July 19, 1840 – September 19, 1891) served as the 10th President of Chile from September 18, 1886, to August 29, 1891. Balmaceda was part of the Castilian-Basque aristocracy in Chile. While he was president, his political disagreements with the Chilean congress led to the 1891 Chilean Civil War, following which he shot and killed himself. Early life Balmaceda was born in Bucalemu, the eldest of the 12 children of Manuel José Balmaceda Ballesteros and Encarnación Fernández Salas. His parents were wealthy, and in his early days he was chiefly concerned in industrial and agricultural enterprises.
