Metro Manila Popular Music Festival
The Metro Manila Popular Music Festival (also known as Metropop) was launched by the Popular Music Foundation of the Philippines in 1977 and held annually from 1978 to 1985. It was "the country’s pioneering and once foremost songwriting competition," according to The Philippine Star. Its objective was to promote the advancement of Filipino music, and its chief proponents were journalist Teodoro Valencia and Imee Marcos. These festivals launched many the careers of songwriters and singers (who interpreted the songs), and gave original Filipino music more than a few memorable and modern-day song classics. Among them is Freddie Aguilar. This songwriting competition was originally open to all music composers. Emil Mijares
Emil Mijares (March 16, 1935 – October 15, 2007) was a Filipino jazz musician. Mijares was born in 1935, the son of Emilio Montilla Mijares, Sr. and O Belo Mijares, and grew up in Roxas City in the province of Capiz. He emerged in the 1950s as a jazz vibist and pianist, and was a musical director on Filipino television, as well as a composer, arranger, bandleader and producer. Known as the "grandfather of Philippines jazz", Mijares was the musical director for several Metro Manila Popular Music Festivals and won the Aliw Award for best jazz performer (1983) and best musical director (1985). ''Umagang Kay Ganda'' (, also known as UKG) was a Philippine morning show that aired on ABS-CBN from June 25, 2007, to May 5, 2020. Prior to broadcast stoppage and the COVID-19 pandemic, the program was aired every weekday mornings from 5:00AM to 8:00AM on the network's ''Umaganda'' morning block. It also aired worldwide via TFC. George Canseco
George Masangkay Canseco (April 23, 1934 – November 19, 2004) was a Filipino composer and former politician. He composed numerous popular Filipino songs. Early years Canseco studied and graduated with a Liberal Arts degree at University of the East in the Philippines. After graduation, he worked for ''The Philippines Herald'' and The Associated Press as a journalist. He also freelanced as a scriptwriter for hire in Manila. Canseco was commissioned by former Philippines First lady, Imelda Marcos, to compose the national tribute hymn, "Ako ay Pilipino". Later career Canseco wrote the classic "Kapantay ay Langit", a theme from the award-winning Motion Picture sung by Amapola. It was later popularized by Pilita Corrales, which eventually became her signature song. The Apolinario Mabini Hiking Society, later popularly known as APO Hiking Society, or simply APO, was a Filipino musical group and one of the pillars of Original Pilipino Music ( OPM) composed of Danny Javier†, Jim Paredes, and Boboy Garrovillo.
