Members Of The Northern Ireland Forum
This is a list of members of the Northern Ireland Forum. The Forum was elected in 1996. Most members were elected on a constituency basis, but the ten highest political parties winning the most votes were each allocated two top-up seats. 110 members were elected. The Sinn Féin members did not take their seats, while the Social Democratic and Labour Party and UK Unionist Party members later withdrew. Northern Ireland Forum
The Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue was a body set up in 1996 as part of a process of negotiations that eventually led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. The forum was elected, with five members being elected for each Westminster Parliamentary constituency for Northern Ireland, under the D'Hondt method of party-list proportional representation. There was also a "topup" of two seats for the ten parties polling most votes; this ensured that two loyalist parties associated with paramilitary groups were represented. Robert Coulter
Robert Coulter (23 October 1929 – 5 September 2018) was a Northern Irish politician, a member of the Ulster Unionist Party and a prominent proponent of unionism. Between 1998 and 2011 he served as an Ulster Unionist Party MLA for North Antrim. Coulter was born in 1929, making him the second oldest MLA after the Rev. Ian Paisley. He was educated at Ballymena College, Trinity College, Dublin and the University of Ulster. He was married with one son and one daughter. He was a retired Presbyterian minister and a former lecturer in religious studies at Belfast Institute for Further and Higher Education. He was elected a Councillor for Ballymena Borough Council in 1985 and was Mayor of Ballymena from 1993 to 1996. South Antrim (Assembly Constituency)
South Antrim (, Ulster Scots: ''Sooth Anthrim'') is a constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election for the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1973. It usually shares boundaries with the South Antrim UK Parliament constituency, however the boundaries of the two constituencies were slightly different from 1983 to 1986 as the Assembly boundaries had not caught up with Parliamentary boundary changes and from 1996 to 1997 when members of the Northern Ireland Forum had been elected from the newly drawn Parliamentary constituencies but the 51st Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected in 1992 under the 1983–95 constituency boundaries, was still in session. John Hunter (Northern Ireland Politician)
John Hunter is a former Ulster unionist politician. An active member of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), Hunter wrote ''A Brief History of the Ulster Unionist Council'' in 1993. Hunter was close to David Trimble and, unenthusiastic about Jim Molyneaux's leadership of the party, he backed Trimble's successful candidacy in the September 1995 leadership election. However, he rapidly became unhappy with Trimble's willingness to reconsider the party's views on the Irish republican movement. He accompanied Trimble to a meeting with John Major in June 1996, at which Major announced that he intended to ask George J. Mitchell to chair talks relating to the Northern Ireland peace process. John Gorman (politician)
Sir John Reginald Gorman CVO, CBE, MC, DL (1 February 1923 – 26 May 2014) was an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who served as a Deputy Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly from 2000 to 2002, and was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for North Down from 1998 to 2003. He was a Catholic Unionist. Early life He was born at Mullaghmore House, Omagh in 1923 and educated at Rockport School in Holywood Co Down, Loreto Convent Grammar School (Omagh), Portora Royal School, Glasgow University and Harvard Business School. World War II When the Second World War broke out in September 1939, Gorman was attending the Imperial Service College in Windsor. Joe Gaston
Joe Gaston (1926 or 1927 – 15 March 2018) was a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland. He was re-elected in 1977, for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). In December 1977, Gaston's right leg was removed by a bomb planted in his tractor by the Provisional Irish Republican Army. Gaston was elected at the 1982 Northern Ireland Assembly election in North Antrim. In 1985, he served as Deputy Mayor of Ballymoney, then as Mayor from 1986–87 and 1990–1993. Upper Bann (Assembly Constituency)
Upper Bann (, Ulster Scots: ''Ower Bann'') is a constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election for the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996. Since 1998, it has elected members to the current Assembly. For Assembly elections prior to 1996, the constituency was largely part of the Armagh and South Down constituencies with a small section around Aghagallon joining from South Antrim. Sam Gardiner
Alderman Samuel Gardiner MBE JP (24 March 1940 – 8 November 2022) was a Northern Irish Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Upper Bann from 2003 to 2016. Gardiner was elected to Lurgan Borough Council (now Craigavon Borough Council) in 1963 and held office of mayor in that borough in 1968. He was mayor of Craigavon 1982/3, 1988/9 and 2000/1. Gardiner was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum and was party whip in the same in 1996–1998. Gardiner was elected to the Assembly in 2003. He served on the Environmental, Leisure Services and Public Services Liaison Committees and was the UUP spokesperson on environment. As the oldest Northern Ireland Assembly member, Gardiner also served as Father of the House, a role which includes presiding over the election of a new Speaker of the Assembly. Sam Foster (politician)
Major Samuel Foster (7 December 1931 – 19 August 2014) was an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who served in the Northern Ireland Executive from 1998 to 2002, and was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Fermanagh and South Tyrone from 1998 to 2003. Foster was educated at Enniskillen Technical College and the Ulster Polytechnic, and was by profession a Social Worker. He was a Special Constable in the Ulster Special Constabulary for 21 years and was an Officer with the rank of Major in the Ulster Defence Regiment until his election to Fermanagh District Council in 1981. He retired from the Council in 2001 having been Chairman in 1995–97. He was highly commended for his efforts to rescue victims of the 1987 Remembrance Day bombing, of which he was nearly a victim himself. Reg Empey
Reginald Norman Morgan Empey, Baron Empey, (born 26 October 1947), best known as Reg Empey, is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland, who was the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) from 2005 to 2010. He was the chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party from 2012 to 2019. Empey was also twice Lord Mayor of Belfast and was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Belfast from 1998 to 2011.
