The National Professional Basketball League ( or LNBP) is the top professional basketball league in Mexico. The league was founded in 2000 with 10 teams. Despite its short history, the LNBP has established itself as the one of the most important basketball leagues in Latin America. Famous basketball players who have played in the league include Jamario Moon, Dennis Rodman, Sun Mingming, Horacio Llamas and many others. History Foundation In January 2000, some teams of CIMEBA (Circuito Mexicano de Básquetbol), the national basketball league in Mexico at the time, exited the league, citing CIMEBA's financial difficulties, and decided to form a new league. On March 11, 2000 the league was founded in the city of Durango with 11 teams participating. Libertadores de Querétaro (English: ''Querétaro Liberators'') is a professional Mexican basketball team, based in Querétaro City, Querétaro. The Libertadores are part of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, the top professional basketball league in Mexico. The team plays their home games at the Auditorio General Arteaga, with a capacity of 4,138 spectators. Libertadores was established in 2009 and joined Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional for the 2009–10 season, but it folded after the end of the season. The team came back for the 2017–18 season. Astros de Jalisco (English: ''Jalisco Astros'') is a professional Mexican basketball team, based in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The Astros are part the CIBACOPA and the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, the top professional basketball league in Mexico. The team plays its home games at the Arena Astros, with a capacity of 4,000 spectators. History The Astros were presented in February 2019 as a joint effort between the government of the State of Jalisco and Grupo Multimedios, a media conglomerate. Correcaminos UAT Victoria
The Correcaminos UAT Victoria (English: ''UAT Victoria Roadrunners'') is a Mexican professional basketball team. It has been a member of the LNBP since the 2000 season. History Correcaminos UAT Victoria was founded in 1995 as a founding member of the Conferencia de Básquetbol Profesional (CBP). They joined Circuito Mexicano de Básquetbol (CIMEBA) in 1997, and then the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional in 2000. It was the champion in 2002, and reached the league finals twice. Plateros de Fresnillo (English: ''Fresnillo Silversmiths'') is a professional Mexican basketball team, based in Fresnillo. The Plateros are part Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, the top professional basketball league in Mexico. The team play their home games at the Gimnasio Solidaridad Municipal, with a capacity of 4,000 spectators. History The Plateros were founded in 2019 in order to compete in the 2019–20 LNBP season. The team was created by an initiative of the local government of Fresnillo and the state government of Zacatecas in order to promote basketball in the region. 2000 LNBP Season
The 2000 LNBP was the 1st season of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, one of the professional basketball leagues of Mexico. It started on August 7, 2000 and ended in December 2000. The league title was won by Correcaminos UAT Tampico, which defeated Correcaminos UAT Victoria in the championship series. Format 11 teams take part in the season. Since the number of teams is odd, one team rests each week. The teams are divided in two groups (A and B), and their ranking among these groups depends on their position in the regular season standings. The first 4 teams of each group qualify for the postseason. The Circuito Mexicano de Básquetbol, also known with the acronym CIMEBA, was a professional basketball league in Mexico. The first edition was the 1970–71 season, and it continued until the 2006–07 season, after which the league was discontinued. The league coexisted with the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) from 2000 to 2007, and with the Circuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico (CIBACOPA) from 2001 to 2007. Horacio Llamas
Horacio Llamas Grey (born July 17, 1973) is a Mexican former professional basketball player. He played two seasons with the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA), becoming the first Mexican-born player in NBA history. Early years Llamas was born in El Rosario, Sinaloa, Mexico, the first child of Horacio and Ana Luisa Llamas. He practiced karate from the age of two, followed by baseball, and did not begin playing basketball until he was 15.
