The mass media in Nicaragua consist of several different types of communications media: television, radio, cinema, newspapers, magazines, and Internet-based Web sites. Freedom of speech is a right guaranteed by the Constitution of Nicaragua. Canal 15 (formerly known as 100% Noticias) was a Nicaraguan cable TV channel broadcasting from the city of Managua and founded by the local journalist Miguel Mora Barberena and his wife Verónica Chavez. Canal 10 is a nationwide Terrestrial television, terrestrial television channel from Nicaragua owned by Radio y Televisión de Nicaragua, S.A. (RATENSA), a company founded by Mexico, Mexican investors. RATENSA formerly owned Canal 4 (Nicaragua), Canal 4 and also owns a local network of four affiliated radio stations Tropicálida, Alfa (radio station), Alfa, Radio Galaxia La Picosa and Radio Joya. History The achievement of a supposed agreement between president Daniel Ortega and Mexican businessman Ángel González in 2007 for him to hand over Canal 4 practically free of charge, had led the telecommunications regulator (Telcor) to deliver a frequency that was assigned to be used exclusively by the State, which would offer public television. Telenica (branded as TN8) is a nationwide state-run terrestrial television channel from Nicaragua, founded by Nicaraguan businessman Carlos Briceño in 1992. The channel was bought by Juan Carlos Ortega Murillo in late 2009, yet it was not made public until January 2010, the change in ownership led to a change in profile. TN8 is one of Nicaragua's main channels. Before nationalization, Telenica, S.A. was also the owner of Radio 8, a local radio station. Canal 8 has the number one news program in the country (Crónica TN8), and it also has the number one sports show in the country. Canal 6 is a Nicaraguan terrestrial television channel broadcasting from the city of Managua. The station claims to be owned by the Government of Nicaragua, but is actually owned by a joint stock company called NEPISA (Negocios Publicitarios Internacionales) History Canal 6 started broadcasting on January 17, 1957, as Nicaragua's second television channel, after channel 8 that signed on the year before. It was owned by Salvadora Debayle de Somoza and Lilliam Somoza de Sevilla, daughter of the then president Anastasio Somoza Garcia. Canal 2 is a Nicaraguan free-to-air television network owned by Televicentro de Nicaragua, S.A. History Televicentro de Nicaragua, S.A. was founded in December 1965 by Octavio Sacasa Sarria and started broadcasting in March 1966. It was the third television channel in Nicaragua after Channel 6, owned by the Somoza family. Televicentro started broadcasting in colour in 1973.
