Marion, South Australia
Marion is a suburb in the City of Marion, around south-west of the city centre of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Founded as a rural village in 1838 on the banks of the Sturt River, Marion was found to have rich soil and the population expanded rapidly. Colonel William Light laid out the plan for the village, as he had done with the City of Adelaide itself. Marion is bordered on the north by Oaklands Road, on the east by Marion Road, on the south by Sturt Road and on the west by a roughly straight line from Finniss Street in the south to The Parade. History The township of Marion was laid out by William Light and B. T. Finniss in 1838, and was (mis)named for Marianne Fisher (1827–1927), daughter of the Resident Commissioner, James Hurtle Fisher. Gibson is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It was created by the redistribution conducted in 2016, and was contested for the first time at the 2018 state election. It replaced the former seat of Bright. Marion Railway Station
Marion railway station is located on the Seaford line. Situated in the south-western Adelaide suburb of Marion, it is 11.4 kilometres from Adelaide station. History Until the early 1950s the Ascot Park and Oaklands stations serviced Marion with a single rail track. In 1953 the line was duplicated as far as Oaklands, and as part of that work a new station was constructed at Marion. It was opened on 26 May 1954. Marion received a station building similar to that still remaining at Woodlands Park station. In the 1960s concerns were raised regarding the safety of pedestrians crossing at the southern end of the station, where no pedestrian barriers had been installed. This lack was seen as contributing to a fatality in 1967. Mitchell is a former electoral district of the House of Assembly in the state of South Australia. It was first created in the redistribution of 1969, taking effect at the 1970 election. Mitchell was replaced by Black at the 2018 election, resulting from the 2016 electoral redistribution. Mitchell was named after philosopher Sir William Mitchell. Mitchell was located in inner-south western Adelaide, and covered and encompassed the suburbs of Dover Gardens, Old Reynella, Reynella, Seacombe Gardens, Seacombe Heights, Seaview Downs, Sheidow Park, Sturt and Trott Park and parts of Darlington, O'Halloran Hill, Oaklands Park and Warradale. Felicity-Ann Lewis
Dr Felicity-Ann Lewis (born 1957) is a former mayor of the City of Marion and South Australia's Australian of the Year for 2014. She received a Centenary Medal for service to the community, particularly as Mayor, City of Marion. Lewis has worked towards reconciliation with Aboriginal people and was on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial Fundraising Committee. She has also worked to assist settlement for refugees and migrants. She received a Doctorate of Education from University of South Australia in August 2013 and is a retired senior lecturer in Health Education at Flinders University. Local government Lewis served four terms as mayor of Marion between 2000 and 2014. She was also National President of the Australian Local Government Association. South Australia Aquatic And Leisure Centre
The South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC), also known as the State Aquatic Centre, is a swimming venue located in the Adelaide suburb of Oaklands Park in South Australia. The centre is managed by the YMCA on behalf of the Government of South Australia. In April 2011 South Australian Premier Mike Rann opened the Centre, the most advanced swimming and diving facilities in Australia, in Marion. He was joined at the opening by Marion Mayor Felicity-Ann Lewis. Lewis and Rann had championed the project for some years to enable Olympic standard aquatic sports to occur in South Australia. Clovelly Park is an inner southern suburb of Adelaide in the local government area of the City of Marion. Before becoming an 'advanced' suburb, it was a farm and vineyard. The suburb is bordered by Daws Road to the north, South Road to the east, Sturt Road to the south, and a combination of Percy Avenue and the Flinders railway line to the west. Westminster School is an independent, Uniting Church, Early Learning to Year 12, coeducational, day and boarding school located at Marion, South Australia, 12 km south of Adelaide. Founded as a Methodist day and boarding school for boys, the school was opened by the Prime Minister Robert Menzies in 1961 and is named after Westminster School in London.
