A soap opera, or ''soap'' for short, is a typically long-running radio or television Serial (radio and television), serial, frequently characterized by melodrama, ensemble casts, and sentimentality. The term "soap opera" originated from radio dramas originally being sponsored by soap manufacturers.Bowles, p. 118. The term was preceded by "horse opera", a derogatory term for low-budget Westerns. BBC Radio's ''The Archers'', first broadcast in 1950, is the world's longest-running radio soap opera. James Hyde (actor)
James Robert Hyde (born October 9, 1962) is an American actor, dancer, and former fashion model who played the role of Sam Bennett on the television soap opera ''Passions''. He was born and raised in Lancaster, Ohio. Biography Hyde had roles in the films ''The Blackout'' and ''Let's Talk About Sex''. ''The Blackout'' has not yet been released in the US. He won an open casting call competition for '' Sunset Beach'' in 1996 and appeared in the promos for the show. He was cast for the recurring role of Neil Johansson on the television series '' Another World'' in 1997. He also had a short stint as Liam on the television series ''As the World Turns'' in 1999. Hyde was picked as a dancer for British new wave band Dead or Alive, which was fronted by singer Pete Burns. Hyde toured in Japan and the US with the band in 1987, 1989 and 1990. David Bailey (actor)
David Bailey (October 27, 1933 – November 25, 2004) was an American actor. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he went on to have a lengthy career in theater and television, perhaps his best known role being Dr. Russ Matthews on the long-running daytime soap '' Another World'' (1973–1981, 1989, 1992). On November 25, 2004, Bailey drowned in the pool at his home in Los Angeles, California. He was 71 years old. His grave is located in Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills Cemetery. Vincent Clarkson, also known by the alter ego Valerie Davis, is a fictional character from the American soap opera ''Passions''. Created by the soap's founder and head writer James E. Reilly, Vincent was portrayed by Phillip Jeanmarie from 2006 to 2008. Valerie was played by Daphnée Duplaix from 2004 to 2008, and temporarily by Siena Goines in 2007. Jeanmarie originally auditioned for the role of a peeping tom before the role was expanded as the show progressed. Jeanmarie and Duplaix were both unaware that Vincent and Valerie were the same character until receiving the script and shooting the scenes.
