''The Dream of Butterfly'' (Italian: '' Il sogno di Butterfly'', German: ''Premiere der Butterfly'') is a 1939 musical drama film directed by Carmine Gallone and starring Maria Cebotari, Fosco Giachetti and Germana Paolieri. It is an variation of the plot of the opera ''Madame Butterfly''. A co-production between Italy and Germany, two separate versions were produced in the respective languages. It is also alternatively titled ''Madame Butterfly''. It was one of several opera-related films directed by Gallone following on from '' Casta Diva'' (1935) and '' Giuseppe Verdi'' (1938).Barron p.142-34 It was shot at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome. Carmine Gallone
Carmine Gallone (10 September 1885 – 11 March 1973) was an early Italian film director, screenwriter, and film producer, who was also controversial for his works of pro-Fascist propaganda and historical revisionism. Considered one of Italian cinema's leading early directors, he directed over 120 films in his fifty-year career between 1913 and 1963. Cinecittà Studios (; Italian for Cinema City Studios), is a large film studio in Rome, Italy. With an area of 400,000 square metres (99 acres), it is the largest film studio in Europe, and is considered the hub of Italian cinema. Guglielmo Barnabò (11 May 1888 – 31 May 1954) was an Italian stage and film actor. He appeared in more than 90 films between 1926 and 1954. Life and career Born in Ancona, Barnabò made his stage debut in 1921 at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, with the Annibale Ninchi's company. Since then he was enrolled by some of the most important stage companies of his time, working among others with Marta Abba, Alda Borelli, Maria Melato, Gino Cervi, Paolo Stoppa. Renato Cialente (2 February 1897 – 25 November 1943) was an Italian stage and film actor. He appeared in 40 films between 1920 and 1943. His younger sister Fausta Cialente (1898-1994) was a novelist, journalist and political activist. Life and career Born in Treviglio, Lombardy, Cialente began acting at his boarding school and made his professional debut with the stage company of Ermete Zacconi.
