Mack Trucks
Mack Trucks, Inc., is an American truck manufacturing company and a former manufacturer of buses and trolley buses. Founded in 1900 as the Mack Brothers Company, it manufactured its first truck in 1905 and adopted its present name in 1922. Mack Trucks is a subsidiary of AB Volvo, which purchased Mack along with its then parent company Renault Véhicules Industriels in 2000. Founded originally in Brooklyn, New York in 1900, the company's headquarters were moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1905 where they remained until 2009. In 2009, its headquarters were relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina. Macks Creek, Missouri
Macks Creek is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southwest Camden County, Missouri, United States. The population was 244 at the 2010 census. History A post office called Macks Creek has been in operation since 1872. The community takes its name from a nearby creek of the same name, which most likely was named after the local Mack or Hack family. In 1997, a state audit of Macks Creek's treasury uncovered major financial woes. Shortly afterward, virtually every town official resigned from office and the city itself declared bankruptcy. In 2012, voters approved dissolving the town with 69% in favor of the motion; above the required amount of 60%. Speed trap designation For years, Macks Creek had one of the most infamous speed traps in the nation, with a strictly enforced 45 MPH speed limit along US 54, which had a 55 MPH speed limit on either side of town. Mack Park was the original home field of Detroit's Negro National League baseball franchise, the Detroit Stars. It was constructed in 1914 by Joe Roesink, sponsor of a local semi-professional team, a Dutchman of Jewish descent born in Grand Rapids who owned a chain of haberdasheries. Location The park was located on the east side of Detroit, about four miles from downtown, at the southeast corner of Fairview Ave. and Mack Ave., after which it was named. The location was then in the heart of the city's German community, some distance from the city's African American neighborhoods of Paradise Valley and Black Bottom, which were closer to downtown. In naval architecture, a mack is a structure which combines the radar masts and the exhaust stack of a surface ship, thereby saving the upper deck space used for separate funnels and the increasingly large tripod masts used to carry heavy radar aerials. The word is a composite (portmanteau) of "mast" and "stack". It is a common design feature on post-WWII warships, (e.g. the rebuilt Baltimore class cruisers), and on some cruise ships. The Marine Nationale used a combined exhaust stack and rear director mast on Richelieu class battleships in the late 1930s. USS ''Mack'' (DE-358) was a in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. She was scrapped in 1973. Namesake Harold John Mack was born on 29 December 1917 in LeMars, Iowa. He enlisted in the United States Navy on 18 May 1938. He reported to on 14 September 1938 after completing training at Great Lakes, Illinois. During the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942, Gunner's Mate 2/c Mack was incapacitated by severe wounds in both legs. In spite of his injuries he continued to fulfill his duties as gun captain until ordered to abandon ship. After the loss of the ship, Mack was reported missing in action and was declared dead on 10 August 1943. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
