Maastricht ( , , ; li, Mestreech ; french: Maestricht ; es, Mastrique ) is a city and a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. It is the capital and largest city of the province of Limburg. Maastricht is located on both sides of the Meuse ( nl, Maas), at the point where the Jeker joins it. Mount Saint Peter (''Sint-Pietersberg'') is largely situated within the city's municipal borders. Maastricht is about 175 km south east of the capital Amsterdam and 65 km from Eindhoven; it is adjacent to the border with Belgium and is part of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, an international metropolis with a population of about 3.9 million, which includes the nearby German and Belgian cities of Aachen, Liège and Hasselt. Cities Of The Netherlands
There are no formal rules in the Netherlands to distinguish cities from other settlements. Smaller settlements are usually called ''dorp'', comparable with villages in English speaking countries. The Dutch word for city is ''stad'' (plural: ''steden''). The intermediate category of town does not exist in the Netherlands. Historically, there existed systems of city rights, granted by the territorial lords, which defined the status of a place: a ''stad'' or ''dorp''. Cities were self-governing and had several privileges. In 1851 the granting of city rights and all privileges and special status of cities were abolished. Since then, the only local administrative unit is the municipality. Regardless of this legal change, many people still use the old city rights as a criterion: certain small settlements proudly call themselves a ''stad'' because they historically had city rights, while other, newer towns may not get this recognition. Wyck (Maastricht)
Wyck (; li, Wiek ) is a neighbourhood in Maastricht, Netherlands comprising the eastern bank of the Meuse ( nl, Maas) in the city's historic centre. Areas The neighbourhood consists of three distinct parts: * ''Oud-Wyck'' ("Old Wyck"), comprising the oldest built-up area, until 1867 surrounded by Maastricht's Medieval city wall. * ''Stationsbuurt'' ("Station Neighbourhood"), the area west of the railway and Maastricht railway station, predominantly dating from the 19th century. * ''Céramique'', on the former factory grounds of Société Céramique south of Old Wyck, redeveloped during the 1990s/2000s. The Maastrichtian () is, in the ICS geologic timescale, the latest age (uppermost stage) of the Late Cretaceous Epoch or Upper Cretaceous Series, the Cretaceous Period or System, and of the Mesozoic Era or Erathem. It spanned the interval from . The Maastrichtian was preceded by the Campanian and succeeded by the Danian (part of the Paleogene and Paleocene). The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event (formerly known as the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event) occurred at the end of this age. In this mass extinction, many commonly recognized groups such as non-avian dinosaurs, plesiosaurs and mosasaurs, as well as many other lesser-known groups, died out. Annemarie Penn-te Strake
Johanna Maria "Annemarie" Penn-te Strake (born 31 July 1953) is a Dutch jurist and politician. She has been mayor of Maastricht since 1 July 2015. In the Netherlands, the municipal council (Dutch: ''gemeenteraad'') is the elected assembly of the municipality. Its main role is laying down the guidelines for the policy of the municipal executive and exercising control over its execution by the mayor and aldermen. The municipal councils range in size from nine to 45 seats, depending on the municipality's population, and are elected by the population every four years. In many municipalities all major political parties contest in the election in addition to local parties. Boschpoort
Boschpoort (; ) is a neighbourhood of Maastricht in the Dutch province of Limburg. The suburb is situated in the North Western area of the town, on the West bank of the river Meuse. The ''Dörp'' (; English: ''village'') as it is colloquially known is home to approximately 1500 people. History The neighbourhood took its name from the old ''Boschpoort'' (English: ''Den Bosch Gate''), one of the seven former city gates of Maastricht. The Boschpoort gate and the outlying defense works were demolished in the 1860s when Maastricht ceased to be a fortress town. The Boschpoort neighbourhood was built slightly North of the old city gate in the early twentieth century. Sint Pieter
Sint Pieter (Saint Peter) is a neighbourhood in the city of Maastricht, in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located on the western bank of the river Meuse, in the south of the city, and borders Belgium (both Flanders and Wallonia). It is a relatively affluent neighbourhood. Sint Pieter used to be a separate village, and was also a separate municipality until it merged with Maastricht in 1920. The municipality covered the village of Sint Pieter and the hill Sint-Pietersberg.
