Municipalities Of The Netherlands
Since 1 January 2023, there have been 342 regular municipalities ( ; Grammatical number#Overview, sing. ) and three Caribbean Netherlands, special municipalities ( ) in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Southwest Friesland ( ) is a municipality in the northern Netherlands, located in the province of Friesland. It had a population of 89,999 in January 2021. Sneek is the municipal seat. With a total area of 841.56 km2, Southwest-Friesland is the largest municipality by area in the Netherlands. History Southwest-Friesland was formed in 2011 from the old municipalities of Bolsward, Nijefurd, Sneek, Wûnseradiel and Wymbritseradiel. Association Of Netherlands Municipalities
The Association of Netherlands Municipalities ( or VNG) was established in 1912 by 28 Dutch cities, at a time when the number of tasks delegated to Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipalities saw a rapid increase. As a result of this increase, there was a greater need for information, exchange of experiences, as well as for an organisation that could represent the interests of its members at a central government level. The Association of Dutch Municipalities is located in The Hague and it represents the interests of all 342 Dutch municipalities vis-a-vis the national government. In addition it delivers services to all Dutch municipalities.
