Mohawks
The Mohawk, also known by their own name, (), are an Indigenous people of North America and the easternmost nation of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy (also known as the Five Nations or later the Six Nations). Mohawk are an Iroquoian-speaking people with communities in southeastern Canada and northern New York State, primarily around Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. As one of the five original members of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Mohawk are known as the Keepers of the Eastern Door who are the guardians of the confederation against invasions from the east. Today, Mohawk people belong to the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte First Nation, Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke, Mohawks of Kanesatake, Six Nations of the Grand River, and Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, a federally recognized tribe in the United States. Mohawks Of The Bay Of Quinte First Nation
The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (MBQ) ( Mohawk: ''Kenhtè:ke Kanyen'kehà:ka'' ) are a Mohawk community within Hastings County, Ontario. They control the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, which is a Mohawk Indian reserve on the Bay of Quinte in southeastern Ontario, Canada, east of Belleville and immediately to the west of Deseronto. They also share Glebe Farm 40B and the Six Nations of the Grand River reserves with other First Nations. The community takes its name from a variant spelling of Mohawk leader Joseph Brant's traditional Mohawk name, ''Thayendanegea'' (standardized spelling Thayentiné:ken), which means 'two pieces of fire wood beside each other'.Isaac, Ruth et al. Thayendanegea or Joseph Brant (March 1743 – November 24, 1807) was a Mohawk people, Mohawk military and political leader, based in present-day New York (state), New York and, later, Brantford, in what is today Ontario, who was closely associated with Kingdom of Great Britain, Great Britain during and after the American Revolution. Mohawks of Kanesatake or Kanehsata'kehró:non are a Mohawk people, Mohawk First Nations in Canada, First Nation in Quebec, Canada. In 2016 the Band government, band has a registered population of 2,508 members. Their main Indian reserve, reserve is Kanesatake, Quebec, Kanesatake Lands located west of Montreal. Mohawk () or ('[language] of the Flint Place') is an Iroquoian languages, Iroquoian language currently spoken by around 3,500 people of the Mohawk people, Mohawk nation, located primarily in current or former Haudenosaunee territories, predominately Canada (southern Ontario and Quebec), and to a lesser extent in the United States (western and northern New York (state), New York). Mohawk Council Of Akwesasne
The Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne ( ; ; ) is a Mohawk Nation (''Kanienʼkehá:ka'') territory that straddles the intersection of international (United States and Canada) borders and provincial (Ontario and Quebec) boundaries on both banks of the St. Lawrence River. Although divided by an international border, the residents consider themselves to be one community. They maintain separate police forces due to jurisdictional issues and national laws.
