Men Of Industry
''Men of Industry'' (Danish: Industriens Mænd) is a 1893–1904 oil on canvas group portrait painting by Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) featuring 53 leading representatives of the technical sciences in Denmark during the second half of the 19th century, seen at a fictional gathering at Østerbro Power Station in Copenhagen. The painting was commission by Gustav Adolph Hagemann and is now on display in the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle, Hillerød. History The idea for the painting was conceived by Hagemann in 1881 while he was entertaining C. F. Tietgen who was posing for Peder Severin Krøyers portrait of him. Hagemann presented the idea of four monumental group portrait paintings for the newly refurbished Great Hall in Børsen featuring leading representatives of the trade, industry agriculture and shipping sectors in Denmark. Peder Severin Krøyer
Peder Severin Krøyer (; 23 July 1851 – 21 November 1909), also known as P. S. Krøyer, was a Danish painter. Life Growing up and early training Krøyer was born in Stavanger, Norway, on 23 July 1851 to Ellen Cecilie Gjesdal. He was raised by Gjesdal's sister, Bertha Cecilie (born 1817) and brother-in-law, the Danish zoologist Henrik Nikolai Krøyer, after his mother was judged unfit to care for him. Krøyer moved to Copenhagen to live with his foster parents soon afterward. Having begun his art education at the age of nine under private tutelage, he was enrolled in Copenhagen's Technical Institute the following year. In 1870 at the age of 19 Krøyer completed his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art ('), where he had studied with Frederik Vermehren. Emil Christian Hansen
Emil Christian Hansen (8 May 1842 – 27 August 1909) was a Denmark, Danish mycologist and Zymology, fermentation physiologist. Born in Ribe, he financed his education by writing novels. He was awarded a gold medal in 1876 for an essay on fungi, titled ''De danske Gjødningssvampe''. During his days as a university student in Copenhagen, he worked as an unpaid assistant to zoologist Japetus Steenstrup (1813–1897). In 1876, with Alfred Jørgensen (1848–1925), he published a Danish translation of Charles Darwin’s "The Voyage of the Beagle"; ''Rejse om Jorden''. From 1879 to 1909, he was director of the physiological department at Carlsberg Laboratory. Hired by the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen in 1879, he became the first to isolate a pure yeast cell, cell of yeast in 1883, and after combining it with a sugary solution, produced more yeast than was in a yeast bank. Sophus Mads Jørgensen
Sophus Mads Jørgensen (4 July 1837 – 1 April 1914) was a Danish chemist. He is considered one of the founders of coordination chemistry, and is known for the debates which he had with Alfred Werner during 1893-1899. While Jørgensen's theories on coordination chemistry were ultimately proven to be incorrect, his experimental work provided much of the basis for Werner's theories. Jørgensen also made major contributions to the chemistry of platinum and rhodium compounds.
