McNary, Arizona
McNary (Western Apache: Cha’bii’tú’) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Apache and Navajo counties in the U.S. state of Arizona, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The population was 528 at the 2010 census. History The community was originally named "Cluff Cienega" by European Americans after Benjamin Cluff, a Mormon bishop who harvested hay here in 1879 and 1880 for use at Fort Apache. In 1919, the name was changed to "Cooley" in honor of Corydon Cooley (d. March 18, 1917), a hotelier of Show Low. In 1924, the Cady Lumber Company moved its entire operations, plus hundreds of employees, from McNary, Louisiana, to Cooley, Arizona. For marketing purposes, the company received permission from the federal government to rename Cooley as McNary. This company was later renamed Southwest Lumber Mills and then Southwest Forest Industries. The mill closed in 1979 after a fire. McNary, Louisiana
McNary is a village in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the Alexandria, Louisiana, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 211 at the 2000 census. McNary was established as a company lumber town that grew to a population of around 3,000 with a hospital, several stores, a theater, and even a pool. When the lumber played out the lumber company purchased a town in Arizona and moved the entire mill operation to what was renamed as McNary, Arizona. The community in Louisiana struggled but has survived as an incorporated village. History By 1880 railroads were arriving and an industrial lumber boom began in Louisiana. Around 22 million acres were in virgin pine which was 85% of the state's land area. There were also large virgin Cyprus stands but these were mainly in swamp or coastal marsh lands. McNary is an unincorporated community (pop. ~250) at the intersection of Interstate 10 and State Highway 20. It is two miles from the Rio Grande and 23 miles west of Sierra Blanca in southwestern Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The area was initially settled in 1921, and named Nulo. McNary Dam
McNary Dam is a 1.4-mile (2.2-km) long concrete gravity run-of-the-river dam which spans the Columbia River. It joins Umatilla County, Oregon with Benton County, Washington, 292 miles (470 km) upriver from the mouth of the Columbia. It is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' McNary Lock and Dam office. The dam is located a mile (2 km) east of the town of Umatilla, Oregon, and 8 miles (13 km) north of Hermiston, Oregon. The dam was originally planned to be named Umatilla Dam, but the Flood Control Act of 1945 renamed the dam in honor of Senator Charles L. McNary of Oregon, who had died in February 1944. McNary Field (Salem-Willamette Valley Airport, formerly Salem Municipal Airport) is in Marion County, Oregon, United States, two miles southeast of downtown Salem, which owns it. The airport is named for U.S. Senator Charles L. McNary of Oregon, who had died in February 1944, a couple of years after the airport became operational. McNary Field has had scheduled airline flights, including service on Delta Connection that ended in October 2008. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a ''primary commercial service'' facility based on enplanements in 2008 (more than 10,000 per year). Federal Aviation Administration records say the airport had 15,205 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, an increase from 12,979 in 2007.
