Hortensia Soto
Hortensia Soto is a Mexican–American mathematics education, mathematics educator, and a professor of mathematics at Colorado State University. In May 2018, she was appointed Associate Secretary of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). She became the president of the MAA in 2022. Early life and education Soto was born in a sod house in , part of the municipality of Teocaltiche in Jalisco, Mexico. Her family moved to a farm near Morrill, Nebraska when she was one year old, and she grew up in Nebraska. Her talent for mathematics was encouraged in elementary school and recognized in high school; already at that age she was called on to act as a substitute mathematics teacher. At Eastern Wyoming College, Soto started a political science degree. United States Of America Mathematical Olympiad
The United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) is a highly selective high school mathematics competition held annually in the United States. Since its debut in 1972, it has served as the final round of the American Mathematics Competitions. In 2010, it split into the USAMO and the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO). Top scorers on both six-question, nine-hour mathematical proof competitions are invited to join the Mathematical Olympiad Program to compete and train to represent the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Eligibility In order to be eligible to take the USAMO, a participant must be either a U.S. citizen or a legal resident of the United States or Canada. American Invitational Mathematics Examination
The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is a selective 15-question, 3-hour test given since 1983 to those who rank in the top 5% on the AMC 12 high school mathematics examination (formerly known as the AHSME), and starting in 2010, those who rank in the top 2.5% on the AMC 10. Two different versions of the test are administered, the AIME I and AIME II. However, qualifying students can only take one of these two competitions. The AIME is the second of two tests used to determine qualification for the United States Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), the first being the AMC. The use of calculators is not allowed on the test, with only pencils, erasers, rulers, and compasses permitted. The American Mathematics Competitions (AMCs) are the first of a series of competitions in secondary school mathematics sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) that determine the United States of America's team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition
