Maria Curatolo (born 12 October 1963) is a former Italian long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon race. Biography She finished eighth at the 1988 Summer Olympics, tenth at the 1988 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won the silver medal at the 1994 European Championships. The Italian Athletics Championships ( it, Campionati italiani di società di atletica leggera) are the national championships for clubs of athletics, organised by the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera (FIDAL), that assign every year a scudetto from 1931 (men) and from 1939 (women). Since 2008, military sports bodies are no longer admitted to the competition, but their athletes have the liberation to participate in a civil club. The Italian Cross Country Championships ( it, Campionati Italiani di corsa campestre) is an annual cross country running competition that serves as Italy's national championship for the sport. It is usually held in February or March. It was first held in 1908 and featured a men's long course race only. A women's race was added to the programme in 1926. The event includes separate races for both sexes across four categories: open (senior), under-23, under-20, and under-18 ( it, assoluti, promesse, juniores, allievi). Short races were held for men and women from 1998 to 2006 (coinciding with the period that it was an official distance at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships). Short course champions were also elected in 1970 and 1971, but in no other years. The first edition, four races only, was held in 1906 at Arena Civica in Milan, just after the foundation of the Federazione Podistica Italiana and with the organization of '' La Gazzetta dello Sport''. Since then, 110 editions were held with the only exceptions of the years 1915-1918 and 1944.
