Luis Sánchez (baseball)
Luis Mercedes Escobar Sánchez (September 24, 1953 – February 4, 2005), nicknamed "Escoba" (broom), was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the California Angels. He also played in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants. He batted and threw right-handed. Career A native of Cariaco, Venezuela, Sánchez was signed by the Houston Astros as an amateur free agent in 1971. After playing through 1976 in the minor league systems of Houston and Cincinnati, Sánchez appeared in the Mexican League. Sánchez was the Angels' closer from 1983 to 1984. After the emergence of Donnie Moore in 1985, he divided his time in the bullpen as a middle reliever or set-up man. In 1986 and 1987, he pitched for the Yomiuri Giants. In a five-year major league career, Sánchez posted a 28–21 record with 216 strikeouts, 27 saves and a 3.75 ERA in 369 innings. Sánchez died in Vargas State, Venezuela at age 51. Luis Alberto Félix Sánchez Sánchez (October 12, 1900 – February 6, 1994) was a Peruvian lawyer, jurist, philosopher, historian, writer and politician. A historic member of the Peruvian Aprista Party, he became a Senator and member of two Constitutional Assemblies, in which the second one (1978–1980), he occupied the Vice-Presidency of the Assembly and the Presidency of the Constitution Committee. During the Presidency of Alan García (1985–1990), he was his Second Vice President and was appointed for a short period as Prime Minister of Peru. In Congress he served as President of the Senate two occasions (1966–1967 and 1985–1986). He is the oldest Vice President of Peru, taking office at the age of 84 years, 289 days. Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro (August 12, 1889 – April 30, 1933) was a high-ranking Peruvian army officer who served as the 41st President of Peru, from 1931 to 1933 as well as Interim President of Peru, officially as the President of the Provisional Government Junta, from 1930 to 1931. On August 22, 1930, as a lieutenant-colonel, he overturned the eleven-year dictatorship of Augusto B. Leguía after a coup d'état in Arequipa. Following Leguía's resignation, Manuel Ponce was interim president until Sánchez was chosen on August 27. The new president flew to Lima and himself served as provisional president until the military with whom he had effected the coup forced him into exile after six months in office.
