Lord Lieutenant Of Wigtown
This is a list of people who have served as Lord Lieutenant of Wigtown, part of the Dumfries and Galloway council area of south-west Scotland. Prior to 1975 the lieutenancy area corresponded to the historic county of Wigtownshire. Since 1975 the lieutenancy area has been the slightly larger Wigtown Area, covering the historic county plus the two parishes of Kirkmabreck and Minnigaff from Kirkcudbrightshire. Title The current title of the Lord Lieutenant is His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Wigtown, or the Lord Lieutenant for the Area of Wigtown. The area of Wigtown, the name of the relevant lieutenancy area of the Lord Lieutenant, corresponds to the local government district of Wigtown established in 1975 and abolished in 1996. A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Admiral George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway, (24 March 1768 – 27 March 1834), styled Lord Garlies between 1773 and 1806, was a British naval commander and politician. Background Garlies was the eldest son of John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway, and Anne, daughter of Sir James Dashwood, 2nd Baronet, and attended Westminster School before embarking on a career in the Royal Navy. Henry John Brewis (8 April 1920 – 25 May 1989) was a Scottish Unionist Party politician and barrister. Early life Brewis was born on 8 April 1920. He was the only son and youngest child of Dorothy Katharine ( Walker) Brewis and Francis Bertie Brewis, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. John Aymer Dalrymple, 13th Earl of Stair (9 October 1906 – 26 February 1996), was a British peer. Styled Viscount Dalrymple from 1906 until 1961 Dalrymple was the son of John Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair and Violet Evelyn Harford. He served as Lord-Lieutenant of Wigtownshire from 1961 to 1983. John James Hamilton Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair, (1 February 1879 – 4 November 1961), styled Viscount Dalrymple between 1903 and 1914, was a Scottish soldier and Conservative Party, later Unionist Party, politician. Military and political career The son of John Dalrymple, 11th Earl of Stair, Dalrymple was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Scots Guards on 16 February 1898, and promoted to lieutenant on 11 October 1899. He fought in the Second Boer War, where he took part in the march to occupy the Boer capitals Bloemfontein (March 1900) and Pretoria (June 1900), and was present at the successive Battles of Diamond Hill (11-12 June 1900) and Bergendal (21-27 August 1900).
