Local Government Areas Of Western Australia
There are 137 local government areas of Western Australia (LGAs), which are areas, towns and districts in Western Australia that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the '' Local Government Act 1995''. The ''Local Government Act 1995'' also makes provision for regional local governments (referred to as "regional councils", established by two or more local governments for a particular purpose. There are three classifications of local government in Western Australia: * City predominantly urban, some larger regional centres * Town predominantly inner urban, plus Port Hedland * Shire predominantly rural or outer suburban areas The Shire of Christmas Island and the Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands are Federal external territories and covered by the ''Indian Ocean Territories Administration of Laws Act'', which allows the Western Australian ''Local Government Act'' to apply "on-island" as though it were a Commonwealth act. The City of Nedlands is a local government area in the inner western suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, about west of Perth's central business district. The City is situated within the western suburbs of the metropolitan area—known colloquially as the “golden triangle” for the concentration of wealth and high housing values. History The City of Nedlands originated in the Claremont Road District, which was established on 30 March 1893 after a petition from ratepayers who lived in the areas of Nedlands and Claremont, which had grown substantially in population at the end of the 19th century. Morley, Western Australia
Morley is a suburb of Perth, within the City of Bayswater local government area, situated approximately northeast of the Perth central business district. It contains the Galleria Shopping Centre, one of Perth's larger shopping centres. Morley bus station is located in the car park of the shopping centre. From the late 1950s, Morley (originally known as Morley Park) began to develop as a major shopping and commercial centre. The name Morley began appearing on maps around the beginning of the twentieth century and was adopted when the Morley Park Estate was subdivided for urban development after the First World War. The City of Bayswater is a local government area in the Western Australian capital city of Perth, about northeast of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and has a population of 69,283 as at the 2021 Census. The City of Bayswater is a member of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council. History In the 1890s, Bayswater was a small settlement, awkwardly straddling the boundaries of the Perth and Swan Road Districts. In December 1894, residents held a meeting to petition for a road board. The government rejected the petition. A second attempt to get Bayswater's own road board in 1896 was successful. Both the Perth and Swan Road Boards were happy to relinquish responsibility for building roads there. Bassendean, Western Australia
__NOTOC__ Bassendean (once referred to as West Guildford) is a north-eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the Town of Bassendean. It is also the name of the sand dune system on the Swan Coastal Plain known as the ''Bassendean Dune System''. History In 1829, the land along the Swan River was allotted to British settlers as they arrived in the newly created Swan River Colony. James Henty and his brothers were granted 2,000 acres upon which they grazed their livestock and built a mud-brick homestead. They called their property ''Stoke Farm''. In 1832, the Henty brothers sold the farm to the Colonial Secretary, Peter Broun who re-named the homestead ''Bassendean''. Over the years the Bassendean property became incorporated into the suburb of West Guildford and in 1922, West Guildford was renamed Bassendean. The Town covers an area of , maintains 97 km of roads and had a population of approximately 15,000 as at the 2016 Census. The Town of Bassendean is a member of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council. History The West Guildford Road District was created on 10 May 1901. It was renamed the Bassendean Road District on 7 July 1922, and on 1 July 1961, became the Shire of Bassendean following the enactment of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Armadale, Western Australia
Armadale is a suburb of Perth within the City of Armadale, located on the south-eastern edge of the Perth metropolitan region. The major junction of the South Western and Albany Highways, which connect Perth with the South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia respectively, is located within the suburb. It is also the terminus of the Armadale railway line, one of five major railway lines to service Perth.
