Abbreviation
An abbreviation (from Latin ''brevis'', meaning ''short'') is a shortened form of a word or phrase, by any method. It may consist of a group of letters or words taken from the full version of the word or phrase; for example, the word ''abbreviation'' can itself be represented by the abbreviation ''abbr.'', ''abbrv.'', or ''abbrev.''; ''NPO'', for nil (or nothing) per (by) os (mouth) is an abbreviated medical instruction. It may also consist of initials only, a mixture of initials and words, or words or letters representing words in another language (for example, e.g., i.e. or RSVP). Some types of abbreviations are acronyms (some pronounceable, some initialisms) or grammatical contractions or crasis. An abbreviation is a shortening by any of these or other methods. Different types of abbreviation Acronyms, initialisms, contractions and crasis share some semantic and phonetic functions, and all four are connected by the term "abbreviation" in loose parlance. List Of Medical Abbreviations
Abbreviations are used very frequently in medicine. They boost efficiency as long as they are used intelligently. The advantages of brevity should be weighed against the possibilities of obfuscation (making the communication harder for others to understand) and ambiguity (having more than one possible interpretation). Certain medical abbreviations are avoided to prevent mistakes, according to best practices (and in some cases regulatory requirements); these are flagged in the list of abbreviations used in medical prescriptions. Orthographic styling Periods (stops) Periods (stops) are often used in styling abbreviations. Prevalent practice in medicine today is often to forego them as unnecessary. * Example: ** ''Less common:'' The diagnosis was C.O.P.D.     hronic obstructive pulmonary disease** ''More common:'' The diagnosis was COPD Plurals The prevalent way to represent plurals for medical acronyms and initialisms is simply to affix a lowercase ' ...

List Of Hebrew Abbreviations
This is a list of Hebrew abbreviations. This list is far from complete; you can help by expanding it. Using this list Sorting order The entries are sorted according to the Hebrew alphabet. Prefixes indicating prepositions, conjunctions and articles (such as ב, ד, ה, ו, כ, ל, ש) have generally been removed, with the following exceptions: *Where the acronym is incomprehensible or meaningless without the prefix. *Where the prefix is so integral to the acronym that variants without it rarely, if ever, occur. In addition, suffixes modifying abbreviations have been removed using the same guidelines. When searching for an abbreviation ending in a plural, adjectival, or possessive suffix like ית, ים, י, ה, ו, ות, the suffix should be removed if not an integral part of the abbreviation, as described in regard to prefixes above. Depending on the typography, note that the gershayim (״) may either: *Move to the penultimate position, even if the mark falls in the modifyi ...

List Of German Abbreviations
This List of German abbreviations includes abbreviations, acronyms and initialisms found in the German language. Because German words can be famously long, use of abbreviation is particularly common. Even the language's shortest words are often abbreviated, such as the conjunction ''und'' (and) written just as "u." This article covers standard abbreviations in colloquial and official use. It does not include abbreviations that are important historically but no longer in common usage, such as ''k. u. k.'' for Imperial and Royal and ''OKW'' for '' Oberkommando der Wehrmacht''. Types As in English or Latin, German written abbreviations consist of a letter, letters or partial words shortened from a longer word or phrase, such as ''etc.'' for et cetera. Acronyms are a type of abbreviation pronounced as a single word, such as Laser. Initialisms are abbreviations in which each initial in the abbreviation is pronounced separately, such as FBI. It is unsettled question in English style gu ...

Three-letter Acronym
A three-letter acronym (TLA), or three-letter abbreviation, is an abbreviation consisting of three letters. These are usually the initial letters of the words of the phrase abbreviated, and are written in capital letters (upper case); three-letter ''abbreviations'' such as ''etc.'' and ''Mrs.'' are not three-letter ''acronyms'', but "TLA" is a TLA (an example of an autological abbreviation). Most three-letter abbreviations are not, strictly, acronyms, but rather initialisms: all the letters are pronounced as the names of letters, as in '' APA'' . Some are true acronyms, pronounced as a word: as with computed axial tomography, for example, CAT is almost always pronounced as the animal's name () in "CAT scan". Even the ''initialisms'' are however considered ''three-letter acronyms'', because that term appeared first in widespread use, and is overwhelmingly popular today. Examples * Countries: SRI, USA, CAR, UAE, DRC, etc. * Famous people: FDR, JFK, MLK, OBL, RBG, RDJ ...

Reporting Mark
A reporting mark is a code used to identify owners or lessees of rolling stock and other equipment used on certain rail transport networks. The code typically reflects the name or identifying number of the owner, lessee, or operator of the equipment. In North America the mark, which consists of an alphabetic code of two to four letters, is stenciled on each piece of equipment, along with a one- to six-digit number. This information is used to uniquely identify every such rail car or locomotive, thus allowing it to be tracked by the railroad it is traveling over, which shares the information with other railroads and customers. In multinational registries, a code indicating the home country may also be included. Standard practices North America The Association of American Railroads (AAR) assigns marks to all carriers, under authority granted by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, Transport Canada, and Mexican Government. Railinc, a subsidiary of the AAR, maintains the act ...
