''Bannwald'' is a German word used in parts of Germany and Austria to designate an area of protected forest. Its precise meaning has varied by location and over time. Etymology The word ''Bannwald'' is a combination of ''Bann'' (English ''ban'') and ''Wald'' (English ''forest'' or ''wood''). ''Bann'' has many historical meanings in German, one of which refers to an area controlled by and set aside for the use of a landowner in medieval times (comparable to the forests subject to the royal ban in Anglo-Saxon England). A ''Bannwald'' was a forest where a nobleman had the prerogative to make use of it and the creatures in it. For most of the time it was aimed to prevent people from collecting fire wood, harvesting young trees for posts, or collecting nuts and berries, farmers would bring in pigs temporarily to feed on acorns. Provincial forests are located within the Province of Manitoba, in Canada, as large areas of unpopulated and undeveloped forests. Under the Forests Act, provincial forests were developed primarily as a source of sustainable timber supply for forestry operations. Today there are 15 designated provincial forests in Manitoba, totaling almost 22,000 km2. Provincial forests are managed for diverse economic, environmental, social and cultural uses. A private timber reserve is an area of privately owned land, used or intended to be used, for growing timber within the Australian state of Tasmania. Landowners can have their land declared as a Private Timber Reserve and protect their right to use private land to grow timber. Private land or freehold land refers to land registered under Torrens title. A landowner is the person(s) and/or legal entity registered on the Torrens Title. Private Timber Reserves are unique, with no other State in Australia, or internationally, providing the land owner with protection of their rights to use their planted land, land they intend to plant or native forests areas, to grow timber. Growing timber is long term investment with trees often taking decades to grow to maturity. Forest and tree owners need certainty that they will be able to harvest in the future. Private nonindustrial forest lands are forest lands in various countries, owned by a private individual or organization that does not also own a wood processing facility. Nonindustrial private forests cover about 360 million acres in the United States, or roughly one-half of the nation's total forested acres. Nonindustrial private forests or “NIPFs” are unlike public or industrial forests. Most of these forests are small, family owned, and timber-producing. In terms of size, 95 percent cover less than 100 acres, and 60 percent cover less than 10 acres.
