Albena Lake-Hodge
Albena Lake-Hodge (1920 – October 22, 1985) was an educator and politician in Anguilla. She was known as "Teacher Albena". She was head of the Valley Girls' School in Anguilla. In 1970, she guided the amalgamation of the Valley Girls' School and Valley Boys' School into the Valley Primary School. Lake-Hodge was elected to the Anguilla House of Assembly in 1976 and served as Minister of Social Services from 1976 to 1980. She supported the motion of no confidence which brought down the government of Ronald Webster in 1977. She defeated Webster in 1984 in the constituency of Valley South and was named Minister of Education in the Executive Council. She resigned from her ministerial post in July 1985 due to health problems. She died in office 3 months later. Lake-Hodge was a founding member of the Anguilla National Alliance. The governor-general of the Bahamas is the vice-regal representative of the Bahamian monarch, currently King Charles III, in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The governor-general is appointed by the monarch on the recommendation of the prime minister of the Bahamas. The functions of the governor-general include appointing ministers, judges, and ambassadors; giving royal assent to legislation passed by parliament; and issuing writs for election. Sandra Mason
Dame Sandra Prunella Mason (born 17 January 1949) is a Barbadian politician, lawyer, and diplomat who is serving as the first president of Barbados since 2021. She was previously the eighth and final governor-general of Barbados from 2018 to 2021, the second woman to hold the office. On 20 October 2021, Mason was elected by the Parliament of Barbados to become the country's first president, and took office on 30 November 2021, when Barbados ceased to be a constitutional monarchy and became a republic. Mason was a practicing attorney-at-law who has served as a High Court judge in Saint Lucia and a Court of Appeal judge in Barbados, and was the first woman admitted to the bar in Barbados. The president of Barbados is the head of state of Barbados and the commander-in-chief of the Barbados Defence Force. The office was established when the country became a parliamentary republic on 30 November 2021. Before, the head of state was Elizabeth II, Queen of Barbados, who was represented on the island by a governor-general. The first and current president is Sandra Mason, who previously served as the last governor-general. History In 1979, a commission of inquiry known as the Cox Commission on the Constitution was constituted and charged with studying the feasibility of introducing a parliamentary republican system. Mia Amor Mottley, (born 1 October 1965) is a Barbadian politician and attorney who has served as the eighth prime minister of Barbados since 2018 and as Leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008. Mottley is the first woman to hold either position. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system, following constitutional changes she introduced that abolished the country's constitutional monarchy. Mottley has been the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Saint Michael North East since 1994. Dame Ruth Nita Barrow, GCMG DA (15 November 1916 – 19 December 1995) was the first female governor-general of Barbados. Barrow was a nurse and a public health servant from Barbados. She served as the fifth governor-general of Barbados from 6 June 1990 until her death on 19 December 1995. She was the older sister of Errol Barrow, the first prime minister of Barbados. The governor-general of Barbados was the representative of the Barbadian monarch from independence in 1966 until the establishment of a republic in 2021. Under the government's Table of Precedence for Barbados, the governor-general of Barbados was regarded as being the most important of all personnel of the Barbados government. Dame Billie Antoinette Miller, DA, OOC (born 8 January 1944) is a Barbadian politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister. Miller is a member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Early life and education Billie Miller's father, the late Frederick Edward Miller, was himself a parliamentarian of distinction, holding the Ministerial portfolios of Health and Social Services from 1956 to 1961, while her mother Mildred Miriam (''née'' Lashley) was a nurse. Edna Ermyntrude Bourne
Edna Ermyntrude "Ermie" Bourne was a politician from Barbados who was the first woman to be elected to the House of Assembly of Barbados. In the 1951 general election, Bourne was elected to represent the parish of Saint Andrew, Barbados, St. Andrew and served until 1961. She is buried at the St. Andrew Anglican parish churchyard. Legacy The 'Ermy Bourne Highway' was dedicated after the politician. The Committee Room of the East-wing of the Parliament of Barbados was posthumously named the 'Ermyntrude ‘Ermy’ Bourne room' in 2018.
