Senate Of The Czech Republic
The Senate (), literally "Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic", is the upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The seat of the Senate is Wallenstein Palace in Prague. Structure The Senate has 81 members, chosen in single-seat constituencies through the two-round system. If no candidate receives a majority of votes in the first round, there is a second round between the two highest-placed candidates. The term of office for Senators is six years, and elections are staggered so that a third of the seats are up for election every two years. A candidate for the Senate does not need to be on a political party's ticket (unlike in the Chamber of Deputies). The Senate has one President and four Vice-presidents. Its members participate in specialised committees and commissions. The Senate Chancellery has been created to provide professional, organisational and technical services. Jiří Čunek
Jiří Čunek (born 22 February 1959) is a Czech politician who was the leader of the Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party from December 2006 to May 2009. Čunek was also deputy prime minister and the minister for Regional Development in Mirek Topolánek's Second Cabinet until 23 January 2009. Since 2006, Čuněk has been senator from Vsetín and since 2 November 2016 he has been the governor of Zlín Region. Čunek was born in Gottwaldov (now Zlín), and after studying at a technical college, he worked as a car technician for a construction company in Zlín and as a safety technician in Zbrojovka Vsetín from 1982 to 1998. In 1990, Čunek became a member of KDU-ČSL. He was elected to the municipal council of Vsetín in 1994 and became mayor of the town in 1998. Daniela Filipiová
Daniela Filipiová (born 9 August 1957) is a Czech architect and politician. She served as Minister of Health for the Czech Republic from 23 January 2009 to 8 May 2009. A member of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) Filipiová was a Senator representing Prague 8. Filipiová graduated from the Czech Technical University in Prague in 1983 with a degree in architecture. She married and had a daughter, but was bothered by persistent back problems. In 1986 she underwent spinal cord surgery which left her paralyzed from the waist down. Nonetheless, she continued her career, remarried and had a second daughter. Milada Emmerová
Milada Emmerová (born 4 November 1944) is a Czech doctor, politician and former Minister of Health for the Czech Republic. As of April 2023, she is a member of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD). Currently she is senator of Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Personal life Born in Plzeň, Emmerová was married (1966–1982) to Jiří Emmer, and had two children Jiří Emmer (born 1967), who became a doctor, and Helena Emmerová (born 1979). Václav Hampl
Václav Hampl (born 1 July 1962) is a Czech physiologist and a former politician who was a Senator from Prague 1 from 2014 until 2020. From 2006 to 2014, Hampl served as Rector of the Charles University. Research Hampl was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1962. He received his PhD from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1990. He did postgraduate work at the University of Minnesota Medical School and, since 2002, has been a professor of physiology at Charles University in Prague. His research has focused on the pulmonary circulation and its use of nitric oxide as a signaling agent. His research publications have been cited more than 3,380 times, his H-index is 27. František Bublan (born 13 January 1951 in Třebíč) is a former Czech dissident, in 2004 named Minister of the Interior for Stanislav Gross's Social Democratic Party government. Eva Syková (born 1944) is a Czech neuroscientist whose research focused on the origins, mechanisms and maintenance of ionic and volume homeostasis in the central nervous system and the role of extrasynaptic transmission, spinal cord injury. She is currently leading several clinical studies, including a Phase I/II study in patients with spinal cord injury as well as ongoing clinical studies of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and ischemic leg injury. Jaromír Jermář (born 2 October 1956, in Prague) is a Czech historian and politician. He is serving as a Senator in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic (since 28 October 2006), and is chair of the Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Human Rights and Petitions (Czech Republic), Senate Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Human Rights and Petitions.
