The politics of Jordan takes place in a framework of a parliamentary monarchy, whereby the Prime Minister of Jordan is head of government, and of a multi-party system. Jordan is a constitutional monarchy based on the constitution promulgated on January 8, 1952. The king exercises his power through the government he appoints which is responsible before the Parliament. In contrast to most parliamentary monarchies, the monarchy of Jordan is not ceremonial, with the King having significant influence over the affairs of the country. The Parliament of Jordan ( ar, مجلس الأمة ') is the bicameral Jordanian national assembly. Established by the 1952 Constitution, the legislature consists of two houses: the Senate ( ar, مجلس الأعيان ''Majlis Al-Aayan'') and the House of Representatives ( ar, مجلس النواب ''Majlis Al-Nuwaab''). The Senate has 65 members, all of whom are directly appointed by the King, while the House of Representatives has 130 elected members, with nine seats reserved for Christians, three are for Chechen and Circassian minorities, and fifteen for women. Atef Tarawneh (born 1 January 1954) is a Jordanian politician who has been the Speaker of Jordan's House of Representatives from 3 November 2013 to 10 December 2020. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2020. Early life Tarawneh was born in Khalidiyah, Karak Governorate in 1954. He went to primary school in Khalidiyah and Moab. He followed his secondary education in Al-Karak. He studied civil engineering in Greece. From 1981 to 1983 he worked as an engineer in Saudi Arabia. Tarawneh then returned to Jordan and worked as engineering director of the municipalities of Ma'an, Zarqa and Balqa before having that position in Amman from 1984 to 1994. Saad Hayel Srour
Saad Hayel Srour (born 1947) is a Jordanian politician. After entering the House of Representatives during the 11th Parliament he held stints as Minister of Water and Irrigation and later Housing and Works during the early 1990s. He served terms as Speaker of the House of Representatives during the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 17th Parliaments. Between November 2010 and July 2011 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister. Life Srour was born in 1947 in Umm el-Jimal. He is from a Bedouin family. He obtained a bachelor in civil engineering from the University of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Srour first entered the House of Representatives during the 11th Parliament.
