Richard Palmer-James
Richard William Palmer-James (born 11 June 1947) is an English guitarist, songwriter and lyricist. He may be best known as one of the founder members of Supertramp (playing guitar and songwriter); writing lyrics for several songs by the progressive rock group King Crimson in the early 1970s; and for writing lyrics for the 1985 hit "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena" by Sandra. Palmer-James was born in Meyrick Park, Bournemouth, where he got his start in the music business playing in various local bands: The Corvettes, The Palmer-James Group (formed with Alec James), Tetrad, and Ginger Man, all of which included John Wetton on bass and vocals. He was a founding member of Supertramp, playing guitar and singing vocals, as well as writing the lyrics for their self-titled debut album under the name Richard Palmer. He also co-wrote the lyrics of "Goldrush", a song written during his days in the band but not recorded until their 2002 album ''Slow Motion''. Palmer wrote lyrics for ...

Free As A Bird (Supertramp Song)
"Free as a Bird" is the title track from Supertramp's 1987 album of the same name. Released as a single at the end of that year, the song achieved only marginal commercial success, with a top-25 showing on the Polish charts being a relative highlight. Overview The music video for "Free as a Bird" was produced by Sue Pemberton and directed by Michael Patterson and Candace Reckenger. '' Cash Box'' said that "Rick Davies sets an easy groove with his patented, bluesy keyboard style, and takes you to a gospel out-chorus." In 1988 "Free as a Bird" was performed on the Dutch pop music television series, ''TopPop''. In 2012, ''Something Else!'' ranked "Free as a Bird" as the 3rd worst song by Supertramp in their list of the 5 worst Supertramp songs, calling it ..."painful to listen to" and "Utterly uninspired". Although John Helliwell's saxophone solo was noted as being "decent". It is the only song from the album of the same name that survived the accompanying tour. Live recordings we ...

Dreamer (Supertramp Song)
"Dreamer" is a hit single from British band Supertramp's 1974 album '' Crime of the Century''. It peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1975. In 1980, it appeared on the band's live album ''Paris''. This live version was also released as a single and hit number 15 on the US charts, number 36 in the Dutch Top 40, and number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. When "Dreamer" had been released in 1974, its B-side " Bloody Well Right" was more popular in North America leading it to chart instead, at No. 35 in the US and No. 49 in Canada, with "Dreamer" only charting in Canada, that being at No. 75. "Dreamer" also appeared on Roger Hodgson's album, '' Classics Live'', recorded on tour in 2010. Background "Dreamer" was composed by Roger Hodgson on his Wurlitzer piano at his mother's house when he was 19 years old. John Helliwell
John Anthony Helliwell (born 15 February 1945) is an English musician, best known as the saxophonist, secondary keyboardist, backing vocalist, and occasional songwriter for the rock band Supertramp. He also served as an MC during the band's concerts, talking and making jokes to the audience between songs. Helliwell played with The Alan Bown Set, replacing Dave Green when he joined in January 1966, before joining Supertramp in 1973 along with bassist Dougie Thomson, who convinced Helliwell to make the move. In 2004, Helliwell formed the band Crème Anglaise with Mark Hart, who had joined Supertramp in 1985. This group recorded their eponymous debut album in 2005. In 1987 Helliwell played on Pink Floyd's album ''A Momentary Lapse of Reason''; his name was misspelled as "Halliwell". This was after Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour had played on Supertramp's album '' Brother Where You Bound''. Helliwell also played on French singer Jean-Jacques Goldman's 1985 album '' Pos ...

Cannonball (Supertramp Song)
"Cannonball" is the opening track from Supertramp's 1985 album '' Brother Where You Bound''. Overview "Cannonball" was written and sung by keyboardist Rick Davies entirely in the chord of G minor. Davies stated in an interview "I did it simply to see if it could be done". The lyrics to the song may have been seen as a veiled message to former member Roger Hodgson but Davies revealed in a French radio interview that they were inspired by a less than perfect concert promoter whom he refused to name. The track became Supertramp's last US Top 40 single to date, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard singles charts in July 1985. It also crossed over to the dance charts, peaking at number nine. On the flip side of the 12-inch release is a 10-minute instrumental version of the song. Near the LP version's fade-out, the brass play a citation of the Jazz tune '' Topsy''. The promo video was directed by Steve Barron and depicted a caveman who goes after his wayward cavewoman, who left ...

Brother Where You Bound (song)
"Brother Where You Bound" is the title track of English rock band Supertramp's 1985 album of the same name. Written and sung by keyboardist Rick Davies, it is the longest song Supertramp recorded at over sixteen minutes. The song had been around a few years prior to its release; it was rehearsed for the last album of the classic line-up, ...Famous Last Words..., but not finalized. The introduction to the track features a reading from George Orwell's novel ''Nineteen Eighty-Four'', fragments of spoken news reports, and the final lines from the nursery rhyme ''Oranges and Lemons''. An excerpt from "The Internationale" can also be heard from minute 1:10. The introduction is followed by lyrics that speak about the Cold War that was happening at the time of the recording in 1984. A music video was also produced for the song, which was filmed in the derelict Pan-Pacific Auditorium, starring actor Chris Mulkey. The video was directed by Rene Daalder and aroused controversy due ...

Bloody Well Right
"Bloody Well Right" is a song by English rock band Supertramp from their 1974 album '' Crime of the Century''. It appeared as the B-side of the single " Dreamer" in 1974. Listeners in the United States preferred it to the A-side, and "Bloody Well Right" became their breakthrough hit in the country, peaking at number 35 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Lyrical content Davies consciously linked the song to the album's opening track "School" with the line "So you think your schooling is phoney", helping to perpetuate the false impression that '' Crime of the Century'' is a concept album. According to Hodgson, any unifying thread beyond that was left to the listener's imagination. ''Ultimate Classic Rock'' critic Nick DeRiso stated "Bloody Well Right" shares the theme with "School" of "questioning the education system." Structure The song begins with Rick Davies playing a Wurlitzer electric piano 51-second piano solo, leading into the rest of the band joining in. There is then a g ...
