Shopping Mall
A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually Anchor tenant, anchored by department stores. The term "mall" originally meant pedestrian zone, a pedestrian promenade with shops along it (that is, the term was used to refer to the walkway itself which was merely bordered by such shops), but in the late 1960s, it began to be used as a generic term for the large enclosed shopping centers that were becoming commonplace at the time. In the U.K., such complexes are considered shopping centres (Commonwealth English: shopping centre), though "shopping center" covers many more sizes and types of centers than the North American "mall". Other countries may follow U.S. usage (Philippines, India, United Arab Emirates, U.A.E., etc.) and others (Australia, etc.) follow U.K. usage. Eastwood Mall
Eastwood Mall is an indoor shopping center in Niles, Ohio, United States, serving the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area. It is owned by the Cafaro Company. Its anchor stores are Boscov's, Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's, and Target. The mall contains over 100 stores and restaurants across of space. The mall is part of the greater Eastwood Mall Complex, which includes a variety of outdoor strip plazas totaling in over of shopping space. History Eastwood Mall opened in 1969 with Sears, Strouss, Montgomery Ward, and Woolworth as anchors. It was the first mall to feature both Montgomery Ward and Sears. The JCPenney wing was added in 1979. Montgomery Ward closed in 1984, and its building was split among Gold's Gym (now a local gym), Toys "R" Us, and Carlisle's. McFarland Mall
McFarland Mall was a regional L-shaped shopping mall on Skyland Boulevard ( U.S. Route 11) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Located near the interchange of Interstate 20/ 59 with McFarland Boulevard ( U.S. Route 82), it was in the southern section of the city. Opening on February 19, 1969, the mall replaced Woods Square Shopping Center and Leland Shopping Center as the main commercial retail center in the Tuscaloosa area. Brandon Crawford and Associates of Birmingham was the architect for the mall. General contractor for the project was N.C. Morgan Construction Company of Tuscaloosa. McGiffert and Associates of Tuscaloosa provided the engineering services for the mall. At its opening in 1969, McFarland Mall had 2 anchor stores, Woolco and Gayfers and 30 stores. Bessemer, Alabama
Bessemer is a southwestern suburb of Birmingham in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 26,019 at the 2020 census. It is within the Birmingham-Hoover, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area, of which Jefferson County is the center. It developed rapidly as an industrial city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2019, it was named Alabama's "Worst City to Live in" by 24/7 Wall Street. The Mall At Westlake
The Mall at Westlake, almost always referred to as Westlake Mall is a vacant and closed community mall in Bessemer, Alabama. History Westlake Mall was built on a former lake bed, along US Highway 11. The mall opened in 1969 with three anchors, Sears, Grant's, and Loveman's. In 1970, former Governor George Wallace held a campaign event for re-election at the mall that was estimated to be attended by 10,000 people, one of the biggest turnouts during his last gubernatorial race. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the mall saw decline. In November 1983, an 18 year old female was raped after being kidnapped near the mall by masked abductors. All three original anchors closed by 1989, making it a dead mall or deserted mall. Madison Square Mall
Madison Square Mall was a shopping mall in Huntsville, Alabama, United States. The largest in the city, it encompassed over . It was also the oldest extant enclosed shopping mall (after the Heart of Huntsville Mall closed) in the city until its closure in 2017. The mall was located on the corner of University Drive (U.S. Route 72, US 72) and Research Park Boulevard (SR-255). In late January 2017, the mall permanently closed after 32 years of operation. Jasper, Alabama
Jasper is a city in and the county seat of Walker County, Alabama, United States. Its population was 14,352 as of the 2010 census. Named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, an American Revolutionary War hero, Jasper was settled around 1815 and incorporated on August 18, 1886. The first significant growth of the area was in 1886, when the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad and the Sheffield & Birmingham Railroads were completed through Jasper. The population grew from 200 people in 1886 to more than 3,000 in 1890. Jasper Mall
Jasper Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Jasper, Alabama, United States, approximately northwest of Birmingham. History The mall opened on August 8, 1981. It currently is approximately in size, and includes two anchors and about 10 smaller stores. Originally developed by the local Simmons family and Georgia developer George Ewing, the mall is owned by Kohan Retail. Anchor JCPenney moved from downtown to the mall when it opened. The local paper has reported that it is unusual for a mall to have Kmart as an anchor. Sharp Development Group, led by Sam Sharp, purchased the mall from Jasper Mall Associates in 1996. Prattville, Alabama
Prattville is a city located within both Autauga and Elmore counties in the State of Alabama but serves as the county seat of Autauga County. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 37,781. Nicknamed "The Fountain City" due to the many artesian wells in the area, Prattville is part of the Montgomery metropolitan statistical area. History Prattville was founded in 1839 by industrialist and architect Daniel Pratt. The area was largely inhabited by Native Americans and a few settlers when Pratt, a native of Temple, New Hampshire, first observed the Autauga Creek in the 1830s. Heart Of Huntsville Mall
The Heart of Huntsville Mall was a shopping mall located in Huntsville, Alabama, United States. It opened in 1961. The mall was demolished in 2007 to make way for a new $150 million mixed-use development called "Constellation." History The Heart of Huntsville Mall was the first enclosed shopping mall in Huntsville when it opened in 1961. The single-story complex was built just outside downtown at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Memorial Parkway. Its major tenant was a Sears at the southern end of the mall. Heart of Huntsville hosted many community events over the years including several Scout Expos and craft fairs. Gadsden is a city in and the county seat of Etowah County in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located on the Coosa River about northeast of Birmingham and southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
